1891

 

There is no diary for the year 1890.  That was the year Orrie married John H. Barkley.

He and Annie are now the only ones at home, although early in the year they apparently rent out part of the house to another family.  He is now teaching in another school which he refers to as the “brick school house”. 

 

Thursday, January 1, 1891 – I chored around in the forenoon and H. & Orrie came up and stayed all day nearly and they went home about 4 o’clock and at night I went down to Mr. McKernons & got Maggie she came up & stayed all night and it is a pretty cloudy day it kept getting warmer it thawed at night & it rained some too.

Jan. 2 – In the morning we all got up about 3 o’clock and we went down to Salem (stoped & waked up H & Orrie) the went too & we took the cars at Salem and went to Troy Maggie & I went up to a Mr. Wardens and H. Orrie & Annie went down to Albany and we all came back on the 5 o’clock train we got up to Salem about 7 o’clock & got home about 10 o’clock and it rained all the way down to Salem in the morning & it thawed a lot lots of bare ground in the field but none in the roads and it is a dark foggy day very * going in some places Maggie stayed all night.

Jan. 3 – We got up about 9 o’clock and I chored around & sat in the House nearly all day we had only 2 meals and about night I took Maggie down home I went in a while and then came home & it got colder last night it is quite icy now & rather rough traveling very cold at night clear & windy.

Jan. 4 – We went to church and we heard a sermon by Mr. McEachron and his text was Eccleceastics the 8 chapter & the 12 verse when we came home on our way we stoped at a funeral one of Mr. Busseno’s boys got killed by the cars and it is a nice day some cloudy & cool too.  at night we went down to Glenroys awhile.

Jan. 5 – I taught school over in the brick school House and I drove over and I stayed over at night to Kate’s for supper and Martin came over to Glenroys & annie came over with him and at night we all went over to the sociable at Uncle Daves and then we came home & it is a nice day only rather cool & cloudy.  it snowed some now & then.

Jan. 6 – I taught school over in the brick school house and I went a foot and it is very good walking & Annie took a crock of Butter down to Argyle to Mrs. Tilford and Orrie came up in the morning & she went down with her & at night we churned and it is a pretty cloudy day some snowey too  & quite cool.  nice sleighing.

Jan. 7 – I taught school over in the brick school House & I drove over and at night Jen. Williamson came home with me & Phil McKernon came up & stayed all night & at night we all (4) went down to Bedlam to Singing School in a cutter & it was pretty cool and it is a nice day some cloudy & snowed a little quite cold.  nice sleighing.

Jan. 8 – I taught school over in the brick school House & Jen went over with me and it is a nice pleasant day quite cold below zero in the morning and at night Annie & I went over to the church to the Endeavor and Dake went with us.

Jan. 9 – I taught school over in the brick school House and it is a nice pleasant day clear & some warm but quite cold at morning and at night and I rode over to school with Dake and Annie & Mary Jane went down to Orrie’s at Bedlam and at night Mary Jane came up & stayed all night.

Jan. 10 – In the forenoon I went over to the Mud lake & sawed ice & Davie McKnight his man & Andrew Foster & Jessie came down with two teams and drawed ice we got 9 loads in and in the afternoon I packed it away and H & Orrie came out & stayed all day & H. helped us some and it is a beautiful day clear & warm but cold in the morning.

Jan. 11 – We went to church & we heard a sermon by Mr. McEachron and his text was Luke 15 chapter and the 10 verse and the church was full as they was no preaching at either the meathodist nor Mr. Wiley’s church and it is a very cloudy day it commenced raining at noon & rained all afternoon quite hard and it is quite cold frooze as it came for awhile.  but it is getting warmer all the time.

Jan. 12 – I taught school over in the brick school House & I drove over and it is a pretty stormy day it rained all night last and in the morning & it turned to snow & snowed an inch or so & it is very nasty & sloppy and it got cold at night quite icy at night Annie & I went up to W. J. Williamson’s and made an evening visit.

Jan. 13 – I taught school over in the brick school house & I drove down and when school was out I went down from school to Bedlam to Orrie & Dake went to we got our supper there & then we went to the Lecture at the Methodist church and Annie went too she got a nother way of going & Marvin Durkee came home with Dake & I & stayed all night with me  Dake went home and Eliza came over to stay a while & it is a nice pleasant day some cold ditten thaw much nice sleighing.

Jan. 14 – I taught school over in the brick school House & I drove over and at night Annie & I went down to Bedlam to singing school and Annie stayed down and it is a nice pleasant day and we had some company at school 5 boys and in the afternoon I left 2 or 3 to take charge of the school while I went over to the congregational meeting at the church.

Jan. 15 – I taught school over in the brick school House& I drove over and it is a nice pleasant day clear but cool air and it is fine sleighing some icy in places and at night I did’nt go over to the Endeavor and I put up a small grist shelled some corn & chored around.

Jan. 16 – I taught school over in the brick school House and I let school out at 3 o’clock and we had some company at school and it is a clear day but very cold zero and at night I went down and made Maggie a visit had a nice time.

Jan. 17 – In the morning after I done the chores I went down to Bedlam I took a grist in the cutter 4 bags of corn & l bu. of Rye and in the afternoon we had a game of Foot Ball our district against Bedlam we got beat 12 to 5 and it is a pretty cloudy day it snowed nearly all afternoon some and Annie came home with me I brought 3 bags home with me & left two.

Jan. 18 -  We all stayed at home I did’nt feel very well and & H & Orrie came over here from church and got dinner & stayed till night or about & it is a very cloudy day & snowed nearly all day very hard too at times nearly 8 inches blowing & drifting too.

Jan. 19 – I taught school over in the brick school House and I drove around the other way it was drifted full up the other way in places and it is a pretty cloudy day and rather cool to and it is pretty hard traveling now.

Jan. 20 – I taught school over in the brick school House and I drove over and it is a pretty cloudy day and rather cold looks like snow it snowed a little now & then and at night I drove over and seen Abe McNeil & then went over and made Jim McNaughton a call hard going over that way.

Jan. 21 – I taught school over in the Brick school house and at night I stayed over to Kates for supper & Eliza & Annie came over they drove old Dick over I went a foot to school and at night we all went over to the church to the Lecture and it rained some and it is a pretty cloudy day some warm & thawed some.  Annie went down to Bedlam to Orries (she is sick) from the lecture.

Jan. 22 – I taught school over in the brick school House & I drove over and it is a very rainy day it rained nearly all day & most of the time quite hard and at night faired off & I went down to Bedlam to singing school but they was’nt any and it is icy & very sloppy.

Jan. 23 – I taught school over in the brick school House and I drove over and it is a pretty cool day.  but pleasant it frooze some last night & Phil & * McKernon came up & made my school a visit and it is very icy.

Jan. 24 – In the forenoon I chored around & put up a grist and in the afternoon I took a grist down to Bedlam  We was to play a match game of Foot Ball but one of the boys (Andy Hughey) broke one of his legs before the game was called and I took him over to Argyle in H’s big sleigh & Charley Shaughnessay went with me & we got back here about 6½ o’clock and burney brought Annie up home & my cutter & took back Hs big sleigh & Charley rode back with him & it is a nice pleasant day clear & warm thawed quite a lot.

Jan. 25 – I done the chores & Annie & I went to church & We heard a sermon by Mr. McEachron & his text was in John 5 chapter and Eliza stayed at home and kept house and it snowed a very little last night just enough to cover or Hide the ice & it is a nice pleasant day warm & it got some colder at night.

Jan. 26 – I taught school over in the brick school house and I went a foot and in the afternoon Eliza & Annie went down to Bedlam and and done some errands and it is a pretty cloudy day some cool and snowed a little.

Jan. 27 – I taught school over in the brick school House and I drove over and 2 fellows came along to the school House & I sold our pigs $18 and H & Orrie went out to Fort Edward and Eliza & Annie went out with them and it is a pretty cloudy day some pleasant & snowed some now & then through the day.

Jan. 28 – I taught school over in the brick school House & I drove over and at night Annie & I went down to Bedlam I went to singing school and it is a nice day. some cool and nice sleighing.

Jan. 29 – I taught school over in the brick school and I went a foot in the morning and at or before night Annie drove over and we stayed at Kates for supper and then went to the Endeavor and it is a nice warm day pretty cloudy rained some at night.

Jan. 30 – I taught school over in the brick school House and I rode over with Annie she drove M & S and I around that way to Bedlam and it is a nice pleasant day some cool but thawed quite a lot very icy and at night Annie came Home & I went down & made Maggie a visit had a good time.

Jan. 31 – I done the chores and then Annie & I took M & S over to Billy McWhorter’s to stay for awhile & then we went up to Johnnie Williamson’s a visiting and about 4 o’clock I went over to Uncle Tom Hs & Will & I went up to Granville and it was a terrible night it rained all the time out ** & Annie went down with H & Orrie and stayed all night.

Sunday, February 1, 1891 – Eliza & I went to church & we heard a sermon by Mr. McEachron & his text was in Luke & Matthew and Annie came home with us and it is a pretty cloudy day not very cold thawed quite a lot and at night Annie & I went over to the Union meeting at our church and they was a lot there.

Feb. 2 – I taught school over in the brick school and & I drove over very icy and it is a nice pleasant day rather cloudy thawed some cooler at night and the sleighing is getting thin in places and they is a lot of bare ground in the fields.

Feb. 3 – I taught school over in the brick school house and I drove over and it is a pretty cloudy day some windy and it rained nearly all day some of the time it rained quite hard and at night it got quite cool & windy snow is getting thin in places some bare ground on the roads.

Feb. 4 – I taught school over in the brick school house and when school was out I drove down to Bedlam & got supper at H’s and then went to the lecture in Mr. Wiley’s church and after it was out I went to singing school and it is a nice pleasant day some cool Annie was to the lecture & Eliza went down to Mary Lants.

Feb. 5 – I taught school over in the brick school House & I went a foot and about night Annie drove over & I stayed and we went over to the Young Peoples meeting & it is a nice warm day it thawed some.

Feb. 6 – I taught school over in the brick school House and I stayed over to Kate’s at night & after school was out Dake & I went down to Bedlam and then up to the church we heard a sermon by Mr. McKenzie in our church H & Orrie came up & Annie came over with them & Orrie went home with us.  & it is a nice day the sleighing is getting thin.

Feb. 7 – I taught school over in the brick school House and I went a foot and in the afternoon Annie & Orrie drove over to church & I rode home from school.  I taught for a day that I lost about New Year’s* and at night the scholars that had a part in the play came over here to practice we had a good time and it is a pretty cloudy day thawed some about dark it snowed hard and Marve Durkee stayed all night.  They is some wagons going.

Feb. 8 – Marve & Annie & I went to church and we heard a sermon by Mr. McKenzie and it was communion Sabbath and it snowed all last night I guess & it snowed some nearly all day they is about 6 or 8 inches I would think cleared off some colder at night.

Feb. 9 – I taught school over in the brick school House and Annie went over with me and stayed to Martin’s all day and when school was out we went over to Wm. McWhorters and got our supper & the school met over there to practice and it is a rather stormy day it snowed some and at night it rained quite hard. very sloppy.

Feb. 10 – I taught school over in the brick school and I drove over and Aunt Kate came home with me and Annie is sick with the Measles I guess and Orrie came up & stayed all night and at night Dake & I went up to Belcher to our school Entertainment we took Georgia** & Jen had a good time and it is a nice day some cool frooze quite hard nice sleighing again.

Feb. 11 - I taught school over in the brick school House & it is a pretty cold day and Annie is pretty sick the Doctor came up and at night H came up awhile Orrie sat up & I layed on the lounge in the Kitchen and it is a nice clear day but cold.

Feb. 12 – I taught school over in the brick school House and it is a nice day some cool and at night Dake and I went over to the Endeavor & then the school went down to Wm. Durkees to practice our play and it was quite cold and Annie is about the same and Eliza came up from Mary Lants Eliza sat up the minister came here about night to see Annie & took supper.

Feb. 13 – I taught school over in the brick school House and at night I stayed over to Marts for supper to practice for our entertainment they was all there and it went of good and it is a nice pleasant day some cold & clear quite cold at night and Orrie sat up with Annie she is some better today H was up twice

Feb. 14 – H came along early and he & I went out to Fort Edward he got a load of coal and I took out a barrel of Apples $2 and I got some candy for the school & several things for myself and we got home about 3 o’clock and Eliza went down with H and H came back at night & stayed and Annie is getting better and it is a very cold day about zero all day and windy to at night I went down and made Maggie a visit colder than fury.

Feb. 15 – I went to church and heard a sermon by Mr. McEachron and his text was in

first Corinthians and H & Orrie stayed at home with Annie she is some better and at night Eliza came back & H & Orrie went home and it is a nice pleasant day colder than fury below zero.

Feb. 16 – I taught school over in the brick school House & Annie is getting along pretty well.  She sets up part of the time and at night I went up to Johnnies to practice as the school came to practice their parts & every thing went off good and it is a pretty cloudy day at night it rained some the sleighing is poor in places.

Feb. 17 -  I taught school over in the brick school House and at night I stayed over and we met at Daves to practice and they wasn’t all there so it did’nt work as well as it might & it is a pretty cloudy & rainy day the rain frooze as it came part of the time and it is very icy again & Annie is getting along well she is up around.

Feb. 18 – I taught school over in the brick school House & at night I went down to Bedlam to the lecture and from there to singing school and it is a nice pleasant day only pretty cold.  Annie is about well.

Feb. 19 – I taught school over in the brick school House and Orrie came up and got Annie and took her down to Bedlam and they came around & stoped awhile at the school and at night I went up to Johnnies and got supper & then I brought the girls down to Peter Busseno’s & we put my Horse in with one of theirs & took a load down to H’s to practice for our exhibition and we all had a good time and it is a nice pleasant day clear & cool.

Feb. 20 – I went over to the school called the roll & went through a few exercises & left my Horse up to Martin’s & Kate & Mary Jane drove down to Bedlam in the afternoon & Billy McWhorter took us all down to Bedlam in a load & we practiced all afternoon and at night we give an Entertainment in the Hall the Hall was most full we took in over $17 and we all had a got time but one exception Dake was about sick and every thing went of nice the school presented me with 2 Books.  Georgia W. won the prize in the first class Mary Jane Anderson in second class Jennie (?) Weir in third class it snowed nearly all day hard but did’nt snow much at night very slippery under the snow.

 

Feb. 21 – In the forenoon I layed around and was about sick and in the afternoon I went down to Bedlam and straightened up around the Hall and brought Annie Home and it is a pretty cloudy day & it rained nearly all afternoon and it is very soft.  at night I felt somewhat better.

Feb. 22 – We all went to church & we heard a sermon by Mr. Willard McEachron and his text was in Isiaiah 52 chapter & the 10 verse and it is a pleasant day but very windy and some cool and H & Orrie came up awhile and went back before night.

Feb. 23 – In the forenoon I chored around and piled some wood up back in the Wood shed and Billy Liddle came up and I went up in the woods & told him where to cut his wood and in the afternoon I drawed some wood from the wood shed into the Wagon House and then Annie & I went over to the brick school House and got some things & then we went in & seen Norm & Cora they have the Measles and then we went up and seen Jen & Georgia they are down sick with the Measles and I went in & seen Dake he has them too & it is a nice pleasant day some cool pretty poor sleighing.

Feb. 24 – In the forenoon I drawed some wood from the Wood shed into the Wagon House & piled it and Davie McKnight brought over a load of one thing & another and in

the afternoon Annie & I started for Bedlam we met H & Orrie so Annie came back Home I went on down to Bedlam & from there up to Billy McWhorters & got Maud S and brought her home and I stopped & seen Norm & Cora they are about the same & Dake he is about the same and when I came home H was here & I traded him Old Dick for his Black Horse & $  * and it is a nice day very soft the sleighing is about gone thawing pretty fast.

Feb. 25 – In the forenoon I painted the Parlor floore we intend to use for our Kitchen the coming summer and I chored around & in the afternoon Annie & I went up to Johnnies & seen the girls** they are doing pretty well and we went from there down to bedlam to singing school but the Prof. Didn’t come so they was’nt any and it is a pretty cloudy day rained some nearly all forenoon & a lot last night the sleighing all gone we took a wagon.

Feb. 26 – In the forenoon I chored around and I painted the Parlor floore a nother coat and in the afternoon I went down around by McKernons & seen Phil and I drove down on Macklins Point where they are building a large Hotel and then I went to West Hebron and then Home and it is a pretty cloudy & cold day windy & raw at night Annie & I went over to the Young Peoples meeting & it snowed.

Feb. 27 – In the morning I went up in Hartford to Mr. Kennedy’s & seen Lottie she is some better she has the Measles & then I came down & stopped at Johnnies*** & seen the girls** they are getting along pretty well and then I came home & then went back to Harve Reynolds & got him to renew a chattel between Wm. Martin & myself and it is a pretty cool raw day I went in a cart some sleighs a going.

Feb. 28 -  I helped the women folks to move nearly all day I carried a lot of old stuff up in the Wagon House chamber and read out over the Kitchen and it is a pretty cloudy day snowed about night quite hard and they is some Wagons & sleighs both going and at night I went down to Bedlam I went in a sleigh and it is pretty rough.

Sunday, March 1, 1891 – I done the chores and after dinner we all went down to Bedlam we went in a cutter not very good sleighing I took Eliza up to see Mag. Patterson and Annie & I went to the Methodist church.  They was no preaching at our church and it is a nice day only pretty cold quite cold at night.

Mar. 2 – (at top of page is written “Fracas”) – In the morning I went out to Fort Edward took 2 bags of Apples got $2 for them and I put the horse in at the fort and went up to Glens Falls to see a man about getting a position in a Hotel up at Lake George and I got home about 5 o’clock I went in a sleigh it is very good sleighing out that way and it is a pretty cold day pleasant 4 below zero in the morning & Uncle Tom H was down.

Mar. 3 – In the forenoon I went down to Argyle and voted Rep. Straight it was Town meeting and they was quite a large turn out and in the afternoon we moved in the other end of the House John McKernon  Billy Liddle  Will * helped us to move the stoves we put the coal stove upstairs and we have everything moved but the piano it is to be taken upstairs and a big job too.  It is a nice pleasant day cold in the morning but got warmer thawed some I took a sleigh Davie brought over 2 loads of moving.

Mar. 4 – Davie McKnight moved in the other end of the house and I helped him & we moved the Piano up stairs and we got it up quite handy and it is all very cloudy day it snowed nearly all afternoon Davie brought his Horses & family but left his cows till April 1st. they moved on sleighs at night Annie Eliza & I went down to Bedlam to a lecture and then we went to singing school.

Mar. 5 – I chored around and red up & moved the wood in the wood Shed into the wagon House and in the afternoon Annie & I went up to Johnnies and we stayed till after supper & then we went to the Young Peoples meeting and it is a nice day only cold & drifted quite windy & cold at night.

Mar. 6 – Davie went & took a load of Mooving for Jim Henry  to Shushan and I chored around and in the afternoon I went down to bedlam & got the mail and it is a nice day only cold nice sleighing and at night I went down and made Maggie a visit and had a good time and H. Orrie & Annie went down to Argyle to Mrs. Tilford’s avisiting.

Mar. 7 – In the afternoon I went up to Belcher with Davie to a funeral Will Bradfords and when we came back I got my dinner and then I went over in Kent Hollow to see a ---** got home about mid night and it is poor sleighing some places and it is a nice pleasant day some cool.

Mar. 8 – We all went to church & we heard a sermon by Mr. McEachron and his text was in 2 different places and we went in a sleigh and after church H & Orrie came up and stayed till night and at night Dave & I went up to Belcher to Prayer meeting and it is a nice pleasant day thawed quite a lot.  sleighing is poor in places.

Mar. 9 – Uncle Tom H came over to make a cubbert*** for our dishes and to make a zinc**** to put a pump in to run into the cistern and he worked at it all day and Billy Liddle came over and fixed a place for his hens & pig in the barn and it is a pretty cloudy & warm day it rained a lot sleighing is almost gone.

Mar. 10 – Uncle Tom H worked at the cubbert & one thing and a nother put up shelves and Charley Hanna came up to put in the pump and he got done after dark awhile and Uncle Tom H did’nt get quite done at night H & Orrie came up awhile and Billy Liddle cut wood for me nearly all day and it is a nice pleasant day warm thawed some it got colder last night & snowed some.

Mar. 11 – Uncle Tom H finished up at noon and then he went Home.  I chored around & in the afternoon I went up & helped Billy to split some wood and at night Annie & I went down to Bedlam to singing school and it is a nice pleasant day warm some sleighs but they is no sleighing thawing fast.

Mar. 12 – In the forenoon I painted the cubbert & zinc and then I went up & helped Billy to pile some wood and in the afternoon I helped Billy awhile and he got done for me 4 cords and it came on rain about 3½ o’clock and we ate supper early & Annie & I went down to Bedlam and got some groceries & it is a very warm day but getting quite muddy.

Mar. 13 – In the forenoon I chored around and painted the cubbert a nother coat and in the afternoon Davie & I went in persuit of some sheep we was in Hebron. Hartford & Argyle finally we bought some 18 of Duncan McDougall in Argyle at $4 a head fine wool and it is a pretty cool day and terrible muddy it rained at night.

Mar. 14 – It got colder last night & frooze quite hard and it is a very windy & disagreeable day and in the morning I went down to Bedlam and when I came back I went up & helped Davie cut some wood and in the afternoon Dave. Will & I  went over & got the sheep 18. and then I varnished the cubbert & zinc and at night I went down to Bedlam the Band boys met to re-organize.

Mar. 15 – Annie & I went to church and we heard a sermon by Mr. McEachron and after meeting H & Orrie brought up Eliza and they stayed awhile and it is a nice pleasant day only quite cold at morning and night thawed & was quite muddy in the middle of the day.

Mar. 16 -  In the forenoon I went up & helped Davie to chop wood in the woods and in the afternoon I took Glenroy down to Argyle where he is going to live & at night Annie & I went down to Bedlam to singing school to practice for the concert and it is a pretty cool & raw windy day.

Mar. 17 – I helped the teams to load up Glenroys moving they was 4 loads and in the afternoon Billy Liddle moved into the same House and I helped him to unload and fix a place to put his cows and before night Annie & I went down to Bedlam to practice for the concert & it is a nice pleasant day quite cold in the morning.

Mar. 18 – In the forenoon I helped Billy to cross-cut some & chop part of the time & his wife got hurt and so he quit awhile before noon & in the afternoon Annie & I went down to Bedlam to practice for the Concert we stoped at H’s & Orrie and at night it came off they was’nt a very full house and I had to sing in two different pieces and all of the choruses and it is a nice pleasant day warm the roads are getting pretty good in places.

Mar. 19 – In the forenoon I chored around and in the afternoon I chored around & helped Billy to saw wood with machine part of the time and at night Annie & I drove down to Bedlam and then drove up to the Young Peoples meeting and it is a nice day some cool & windy and quite cold at night.

 

 

 

Mar. 20 – In the forenoon I went down to Bedlam to get a Horse shawd & my Cart fixed and Annie went down & stayed to H’s & Orries for the Exhibition and in the afternoon chored around and at night Davie & I went down to the Exhibition at the Hall at West Hebron and Eliza rode down & stayed down and it is a pretty cloudy day warm and it is nice going now.

Mar. 21 – In the forenoon Billy & went up in the woods and throwed my wood down toward the bottom of the Hill and we throwed it twice over and in the afternoon Billy & I went down to Argyle & he got a nother chance * and it is a pretty cloudy day it rained some not much and the Snow is getting thin but they is enough for Banks around yet.

Mar. 22 – Annie & I went to church & we heard a sermon by Mr. Monroe and text was: Well I have forgotten and it is a pretty cloudy part of the day but nice & pleasant all forenoon very warm and before night it commenced to rain & rained quite hard.

Mar. 23 – In the forenoon I throwed my wood down out of the woods and Billy helped me some and in the afternoon I put my Horse in with Davies & we drawed up some of my wood we drawed all afternoon & it is terrible going offle muddy and it is a nice pleasant day warm & some cloudy and at night Jessie Foster Davie & I went down to the Hook now Evansville to a Literary Society and the school House was full.

Mar. 24 – I helped Billy to split wood most of the day it came on rain about 4 o’clock and it is a pretty cloudy day warm Billy & I tapped the trees down by his house the snow is getting scarce I chored around at one thing and a nother.  Davie is working at his wood now.

Mar. 25 – In the forenoon Davie & I hitched up his black Horse & mine together & drove down to the lake where they are building a Hotel & got some lime a peck or so and when we came back I commenced sawing my wood and sawed till night about & it is a nice pleasant day only cool & some windy at night Dave & I went up to Belcher to see a *

Mar. 26 – In the forenoon I sawed wood and in the afternoon Annie & I went over to Andrew Foster’s a visiting & we went from there to the Young Peoples meeting and it is a nice pleasant day only quite cool & windy roads are very muddy.

Mar. 27 – Robert Leonard came over and patched up some plaster on the lower House and I helped him some and then sawed wood and it is a nice pleasant day only cold in the morning and about night I went down to Bedlam.  and got some Groceries & meat.

Mar. 28 – In the morning I finished sawing what wood I had up & cut up the rest of the limbs and H & Orrie came up & Johnnie’s folks all came down here a visiting and they stayed all day for dinner & supper and we all had a good time & Davie brought his Cows down for good or to stay and it is a nice pleasant day warm & clear it is drying up quite fast roads are getting quite good.

Mar. 29 – We went to church & we heard a sermon by Mr. McEachron and his text was in James & after meeting was out we went down to Bedlam to Orries & H’s & got our dinner & then went to the Methodist church & we heard a sermon by Mr. Munroe.  It is a nice pleasant day clear & some cool in the morning.  At night Davie & I went up to Belcher to Prayer meeting.

Mar. 30 – In the forenoon I went down to Salem and got some money that I had in the bank and in the afternoon Davie & I drawed up the rest of my wood and it is a nice pleasant day warm & clear roads are nice now.

Mar. 31 – In the morning Billy came up & helped me to saw wood till about 10 o’clock & then Uncle Daves folks all came down here a visiting & stayed all day and it is a nice pleasant day quite warm & clear.

 

Wednesday, April 1, 1891 – In the morning Annie & I went down to Bedlam I paid Orrie all of her money but $250 and when we came back I sawed & split wood the rest of the day and it is a nice pleasant day warm but very cloudy looks like rain and at night I went down & made Maggie a visit had a good time.

Apr. 2 – In the forenoon I split wood and chored around and in the afternoon Annie & I went down to Bedlam to H’s & Orries a visiting and at night we went from there up to the young peoples meeting and then came home & it is a nice pleasant day warm & dry like summer but quite cloudy & looks like rain but got cooler after night.

Apr. 3 – (at top of page: “Big Snow Storm”) – In the morning it was snowing like fury & kept on till noon or after & snowed alittle all day snowed about 20 inches.  In the afternoon I went up & got Jen Williamson I went in a sleigh it is quite a depth the snow and it got cooler at night quite a young winter.

Apr. 4 -  In the morning Jen Annie & I went down to Salem we drove Dave’s Horse with mine on his buggie it was terrible going but thawed a lot they was a lot of sleighs going.  We tried the Examination Teachers some branches were hard while others were not so hard and Norm Cora & Lottie were down too.  We all had a good time  It is a cool day but the snow wasted a lot we got home a little after dark.

Apr. 5 – Jen Annie & I went to church in Davie’s Buggie and Jen went Home and we heard a sermon by Mr. McEachron and it is terrible going neither sleighing or wagoning and it is a nice pleasant day some cool after meeting H & Orrie came up awhile.

Apr. 6 – In the forenoon I finished sawing my wood & cut up the limbs and in the afternoon finished splitting & chored around and it is a nice pleasant day some warm snow is thawing some but not very fast very muddy going the snow is nearly all of the roads.

Apr. 7 – In the forenoon I read up in the wagon House a little & chored around and in the afternoon Davie & I went down to Argyle.  I had a little business and it is a nice pleasant day some cloudy & cool very muddy at night Edd Busseno came down awhile and Billy Liddle took sick & I went down & sat up with him.

Apr. 8 – In the forenoon I chored around Davie & I sowed the Grass-seed on the rye and in the afternoon Annie & I went down to Bedlam to Johnnie Ashleys funeral it was a very large funeral and when we came Home George McKernon was here and he stayed all night.  and it is a nice warm day some cloudy.

Apr. 9 – In the forenoon George Annie & I went down to Bedlam Annie stayed down to Orries and we brought home some white lead & zinc & in the afternoon I commenced painting on the House & George helped me some and it is a nice pleasant day warm & clear but very muddy going around here at night George & I went down to Bedlam & got Annie & from there up to the Young peoples meeting at the church & *

Apr. 10 – In the morning we got up early & George & I went out to Fort Edward. we took Annie over to Heaths to see Eliza & we took the cars & went down to Saratoga and looked around and we got home about 6 o’clock and it is a nice warm day pretty cloudy dry the roads out to Fort Edward are fine dusty as summer and Davie drawed manure.

Apr. 11 – In the forenoon George & I read up around the Wagon House & chored around & in the afternoon I took George down home & at night I went down to Bedlam and it is a pretty cloudy day it rained a lot or quite a lot but did’nt rain very hard any of the time the snow is most all gone again.

Apr. 12 – We went to church & we heard a sermon by Mr. McEachron and it is a nice pleasant day the roads are getting dryed up some to what they was and at night we went over to the Christian Endeavor at our church they have changed the night to Sabbath night for a while.

Apr. 13 – I painted on the House nearly all day up above the stoop it is a slow job paint-ing the brackets.  And Davie drawed manure all day in the field cross from the barn and it is a nice pleasant day some warm drying up quite fast.

Apr. 14 -  (at top of page: “½”) – In the forenoon I painted on the house along the stoop and the brackets and in the afternoon I went over to the church to a meeting Annie went as far as Aunt Kates & then we went down to Bedlam & done some trading and then came home & it is a very warm day clear & Davie plowed all day he used my Horse in the forenoon.

Apr. 15 - (top of page “½”) – In the forenoon I painted on the blinds under cover in the wagon House and In the afternoon I painted a few blinds (color Green) & then painted on the House under or along the stoop and it it rained some last night & is a pretty cloudy day but cleared of or nearly at night & In the afternoon Davie plowed with 2 teams.

Apr. 16 -  I painted on the House all day on the stoop most all day or piazza & the brackets it is a slow job and Davie plowed all day with 2 teams.  George helped him and it is a nice pleasant day cool in the morning & some cloudy but cleared off quite warm Grass & rye look fine.

Apr. 17 – In the forenoon I sowed the big field to Oats & then I painted on the House and in the afternoon I sowed the field back of the barn to Oats and then painted on the House.  and George McKernon came & he helped me to paint some & it is a nice pleasant day very warm and about night Annie & Aggie drove M & S* down to Bedlam.

Apr. 18 – In the forenoon George & I sowed the Grass seed on the piece back of the barn & then we painted on the House & in the afternoon we had company Martin Kate & Mary Jane.  Jim Barkley Nancy & Orrie came here a visiting & George painted some and it is a nice pleasant day some cloudy it sprinkled some and is quite warm and at night Annie George & I went down to Bedlam & Annie stayed down.

Apr. 19 – George & I went to church we heard a sermon by Mr. Wiley and Annie was there and George got dinner and we went over to the young peoples meeting and it was at 6 o’clock and then we went down to the Union meeting at the Coventeres church & Annie came home with us from there and it is a nice pleasant day warm.

Apr. 20 – In the forenoon George & I painted on the house and in the afternoon we finished it or all of the white about and I mixed up some colored paint & George went home & it is a nice pleasant day warm & clear roads are drying up quite fast.

Apr. 21 – In the forenoon I painted some on the Wagon House & some on the House & I sowed the Oats in the field down above the road or Davie and in the afternoon I mixed up some paint & begun piling some of my wood in the Wagon House and Orrie came up & brought up a barrel of flour & and Wm. Heath brough Eliza over here & at night her & Annie went down to Bedlam with Orrie and it is a nice pleasant day warm & clear. finished sowing Oats.

Apr. 22 – In the forenoon I painted the Back House and begun at the ceiling on the stoop and in the afternoon I painted at the ceiling & piled some wood in the Wagon House & I am keeping House alone and it is a nice pleasant day warm quite warm Davie’s man came on today Stearley Youngs.

Apr. 23 – In the forenoon I finished painting the ceiling and painted some at the blinds and in the afternoon I painted some of the blinds.  & then piled wood in the Wagon House and the Women came back and it is a nice day only some cloudy rained some in the morning but cleared off cooler.

Apr. 24 – I painted on the main barn nearly all day and I chored around some painted 2 chairs and it is a nice pleasant day only some cool & windy & at Night Norm came down after me to help him to plant & I went up home with him.

Apr. 25 -  In the morning when I got up the ground was white with snow and it was snowing but cleared of in a short time and so we went at planting Potatoes & planted all day about and it is a very disagreeable day windy & cool & it would snow now & then & at night Norm took me down to Bedlam & Annie was down there so I came home from there.  nice wheeling now-a-days.

Apr. 26 - Annie & I went to church & we heard a sermon by Mr. Beattie of Cambridge and at night we went over to the Endeavor at the church & heard a sermon by Mr. Beattie & it is a nice pleasant day warm cool at night.

Apr. 27 – In the morning I went over to Uncle Daves and helped Norm to plant Potatoes and we planted all day.  I came home at night and it is a nice pleasant day warm & clear it is getting very dry now & dusty.

Apr. 28 – In the forenoon I painted a little and quit because the wind blew so and then piled the rest of my wood in the Wagon House and in the afternoon I helped Davie part of the time or after * o’clock an I cut potatoes & helped the boys to plant some in the orchard and then I got out my bicycle & rode it down to Bedlam & got some meat and it is a very disagreeable day some windy & cool.  roads are nice & dry only rather dusty.

Apr. 29 – I helped Davie to plant Potatoes all day over in the back meadow and we cut some seed & it is a pretty cool day some windy too Davie & Stearley plowed down on round Hill nice cool day for plowing.

Apr. 30 – I helped Davie to plant Potatoes over in the back meadow in the forenoon & In the afternoon I chored around till 4 o’clock & then Annie & I went down to Bedlam some of the boys met to play ball and it is a nice pleasant day warm & clear at night We went to Prayer meeting at Mr. Wiley’s.

Friday, May 1, 1891 – I painted till about 4 o’clock and then I fixed a little board fence up along the big Hill and about night Harry brought Jen down and it is a pretty windy day some cloudy & warm at night I went down & made Maggie a short visit.

May 2 – In the morning we all went out to Fort Edward Jen Annie & myself to the teachers Examination and I tried in Drawing & History and after we got out we went up to Glens Falls and we had a good time got home about 8 o’clock & it is a fine day pleasant & warm but terrible dry & dusty.

May 3 – We all went to church & Jen went home with her folks and we heard a sermon by Mr. McEachron and it was rainy not many there and it cleared off nice & warm after church we stoped at Martins & Kates & got our dinner & went back to the Young Peoples Meeting.  & then came home.

May 4 – I painted on the shed in the forenoon and in the afternoon I painted blinds and it is a nice day only the wind blew terrible a strong West wind and it got quite cold at night.

May 5 – (top of page: “Freeze”) – In the morning I went up to Uncle Daves and helped Norm to plant Potatoes and we planted all day and at night we went in persuit of little ones but did’nt find any hardly and it is a pretty windy & cool day frooze in the morning.

May 6 – In the morning I cut potatoes till 9 o’clock & Uncle Dave & Norm went and got a few potatoes & then we planted till about 6 o’clock & then it came on rain & snow & Annie came along from bedlam & I came home with her and it is a very cold day raw & windy & when I got home my school Certificate had got around.

May 7 – In the forenoon Davie & I went over to Dock Kinneys & bought 8 bbls. of seed potatoes & then went over & got them & then we cut some seeds & I loaded up what good potatoes I had & in the afternoon I took them out to Ft. Edward 28 bu @ $9.05 a bu. took Daves Horse with mine and it is a nice pleasant day warm & clear.

May 8 – I helped Davie to plant potatoes down on round Hill all day and it is a nice pleasant day some cloudy & windy & smoky and we all planted potatoes and at night I went up to Uncle Daves & got some seed potatoes 4 bu.

May 9 – I helped Davie to plant potatoes all day down on round Hill & we all planted Stearley Dave Will & George and we got most done planting and at night Davie & I went down to Bedlam took a small grist & it is a nice pleasant day warm & smokey.

May 10 – We went to church and we heard a sermon by Mr. McEachron & his text was well I have forgotten and H & Orrie was here when we came home & they & Annie went down to the Argyle Cemetary and Annie went down home with them & I went up to Belcher with Dave & it is a nice pleasant day quite warm.

May 11 – In the morning I rode my Wheel down to Bedlam & left it at H’s & I rode down to Salem with H & went from there up to Granville to attend the Institute I stoped at Munsons Hotel and it is a nice day only it got quite cool.

May 12 – I attended the Teachers Institute both forenoon & afternoon and they is 164 teachers registered and it is a nice pleasant day & clear very dusty.  at night I attended the lecture at the Hall.

May 13 – I attended the Teachers Institute both forenoon & afternoon and at night I attended the lecture at the Hall have had a very good time and it keeps dry & dusty.

May 14 – I attended the teachers Institute both forenoon & afternoon had a very good time and at night I attended the lecture it was good & it is a nice pleasant day warm & quite dusty.

May 15 – I attended the teachers Institute both forenoon & afternoon and I took the 4-17 train & came down to Salem & came up to Bedlam with H & * and got my supper at H’s & then I rode my Wheel home and it is a nice pleasant day warm & very dusty some cloudy at night The boys finished planting corn all done now.

May 16 – In the morning I went down to Bedlam & got Annie & some Oil to paint and then I painted blinds all day & I got them all painted it rained nearly all day it is a fine rain cleared off about night & got colder.

May 17 – We went to church and we heard a sermon by Mr. McEachron and it is a nice pleasant day some cool and at night Davie & I went up to Belcher to Prayer meeting and it is quite cool.

May 18 – In the forenoon Dave & I read away some of the old stuff across the road from the House & begun drawing some of the stones and it came on rain and then we drove my Horse down to Bedlam & got him shawd and in the afternoon I painted on the House Green lattice work.  And it is a pretty cloudy day rained some cleared off cold.

May 19 – (top of page; “Washed Sheep”) – In the forenoon Davie & I fixed fence down around the Follow & lower swamp and in the afternoon We took the sheep down to McAuleys & I washed them 18 and it is nice & warm and then we put up the crow twine and after supper we went up to Belcher and it is a nice pleasant day warm & clear.

May 20 -  I painted all day I finished painting the shed & painted the corn House & begun on the Wagon House and it is a nice pleasant day pretty warm & dry Davie went out to Ft. Edward.

May 21 – In the morning I painted some and then Dave & I drawed some stone away from where the old Hog pen used to stand & in the afternoon we went down to Argyle & got some picket fence to put around the garden.  & it is a pretty cloudy day some rain not much quite warm.

May 22 -  In the morning we chored around and sat 2 bar posts and then we or Dave & I went over to see a pair of Oxen to Charley McEacrhons to trade an old cow for them but did’nt for certain & in the afternoon we put up the new fence around our garden and at night Dave & I went up to Belcher and it is a pretty cloudy day & rained some but cleared off cold.

May 23 -  In the morning I painted awhile and about 10 o’clock I started for Granville & Harry W. went up with me the W. Hebron boys played a game of ball with the Granville boys score 17 R. to 5 in our favor.  and we got home about 10 o’clock Harry came home with me.  & it is a nice pleasant day cool & clear.

May 24 – Annie Harry & I went to church & we heard a sermon by Mr. George Robinson & Orrie stayed at home & kept house & in the afternoon H came up & got Orrie and at night Dave & I took Harry up home & then went on up to prayer meeting at Belcher & it is a nice pleasant day warm & clear.

May 25 – I shore sheep all day about and I shore 12 and in the afternoon Joseph Boyd came over & helped me to shear awhile he shore 3 & Dave done up the wool & it is a nice pleasant day quite warm & clear.

May 28 – I painted all day on the barns and Dave & the boys drove a Beef cow out to the Fort.  and it is a nice pleasant day quite warm and at night Annie & I went over to the Young Peoples meeting and then we went down to Bedlam to Band meeting and it is warm.

May 29 – I painted nearly all forenoon and in the afternoon I made the garden & chored around and Orrie came up & at night I took her down home & went up to George Rogers to Band meeting and it is a pretty cloudy & rained quite a lot & warm.

May 30 – In the forenoon Annie & went down to Bedlam stoped at Hs & got our dinner & then we went down to Salem all of us and the Band played & at night Annie came home with H & Orrie & I went up to M. Rupert & got back to H’s about morning & stayed all night & it is a warm & cloudy day muddy.

May 31 – Annie & I went to church from H’s and we heard a sermon by Mr. Edgar and then we came home and it is a nice pleasant day warm and at night Dave & I went up to Belcher to Prayer meeting and they was a large turn out.

 

Monday, June 1, 1891 – In the morning I went over to Uncle Daves to paint his house and I painted all day and it is a nice pleasant day warm & clear and at night I went down to Bedlam to * Brown & came back & stayed all night with Uncle Dave.

June 2 – (top of page: “2 T. Shower”) – I painted till it came on rain about 2 o’clock and then I went down & visited the school at the brick school House and at night I came over home & Norm came over & stayed all night and it is a nice warm day quite warm in the forenoon but cooler after the shower we had a Thunder Shower first of the season.

June 3 -  In the morning Norm & I took Annie up to Johnnies & then we went over to his House & I painted all day for Uncle Dave and it is a pretty cloudy & cool day some windy at night Norm & I went up to Belcher Dave worked on the road.

June 4 – I finished painting for Uncle Dave got the House & blinds all done and then after supper I went up to Johnnie’s & got Annie & we went over to the church to the Young Peoples meeting and it is a nice day only very cool in the morning some cloudy.  Dave worked on the road.

June 5 – In the forenoon I painted on the Hog pen and in the afternoon Dave & I went up to Belcher & he drove his team & we got a long ladder of W. J. Williamson and it is a nice pleasant day, warm & clear at night Dave Annie & I went over to J. I. Randles to a sociable.

June 6 – I painted all day about on the Horse barn and I painted the High end one side and it is a nice pleasant day quite warm and Mr. Barkley & Orrie came up awhile and at night I went over to Uncle Daves & put on his blinds for him & Annie & I went from there down to Bedlam.

June 7 – We went to church down to Mr. Wileys & heard a sermon by Mr. Robinson & then we went to H’s & got dinner & then we went to the methodist & heard a sermon by Mr. Clark & at night we went up to Belcher prayer meeting and then we came home & it is a nice pleasant day.

 June 8 – In the morning Will McKnight & I took 2 jars of butter out to Glens Falls and we had hard work to get read of it & I fixed up a game of ball to be played on next Friday on the Glens Falls ground & it is a nice pleasant day warm & clear & dusty.

June 9 – In the morning I went up to Uncle Tom H’s & painted for him all day on the barns and it is a nice pleasant day warm & clear at night Will & I went over to Belcher I did’nt go home.*

June 10 – I painted all day for Uncle Tom H on the barns & Will helped some and it is a nice pleasant day quite warm & clear and at night Will & I went over to Belcher and I did’nt go home at night.

June 11 – I painted all day for Uncle Tom H. on the barns and Will helped some and I got done there for awhile and at night I came down to the Young peoples meeting & Annie was there & so we came home and it is a nice pleasant day some cloudy they was a heavy shower went around.

June 12 – In the morning I went down to Bedlam & got Will Donaldson & he & I went up to East Hebron & told Lincoln & Root about playing ball & then came home & about 10 o’clock I went with the rest of the boys up to Glens Falls to play a game of Ball we all went in a load we played with the Athletics we was call the Umpires of Hoosick Falls score 10 to 11 against us. we got $16.50 got money & we did’nt get home the same day. but had a good time.

June 13 – We got home from playing ball about 7 o’clock and I chored around awhile & Annie & I went up to Charles Gibsons funeral I acted as one of the bearers & C. Robin-son  Jen Annie & I sang 2 pieces and then we stoped at Johnnies & got dinner & then came & Dave & I fixed some fence and it is a pretty warm day clear & dusty at night Annie & I went down to Bedlam.

June 14 – We went to church and we heard a sermon by Mr. McEachron and when we came home they was two fellows here on wheels & after dinner we went over to East Hebron all of us on our wheels and at night Annie & I went down to Bedlam to the Methodist church it was Childrens day and it is a nice pleasant day quite warm & clear.

June 15 – In the morning I rode my wheel down to H’s & then went up & helped or painted for James Patterson and I painted all day and it is a nice pleasant day very warm & clear at night I went down to the village.

June 16 – I painted all day for James Patterson and it is very warm & clear. at night I got H’s clothes & Horse & wagon & went to a party up to Belcher at A. Smiths I carried Jen. Williamson & Orrie went up after Annie & she came down with her.

June 17 – I painted all day at James Patterson and it is a nice warm day but rather cloudy & it rained some not much & at night I went down to the village a while took a short ride on my wheel.

June 18 – I painted for James Patterson all day & painted blinds most all day and it is a very cloudy day it rained most all day but not very hard & at night I got one of Jims Horses & Annie & I went up to the Endeavor & then I took Annie Home.

June 20 – I painted all day for James Patterson on the House and it is a pretty cloudy day very warm and in the afternoon Annie came down to H’s & I went home with her at night and she drove M & S.

June 21 – We went to church and we heard a sermon by Mr. McEachron and his text was well I have forgotten and H & Orrie came up awhile and at night Dave & I went up to Belcher to prayer meeting and it is a very warm day clear & dry.

June 22 – In the forenoon I chored around & hoed out the garden and in the afternoon I went down to Bedlam Annie took me down and & I painted for James Patterson & it rained in the forenoon cleared off warm.

June 23 – I painted all day for James Patterson and it is a pretty cloudy day & very warm too. at night N, McIntyre & I went down to the Methodist prayer meeting and Annie is down to H’s.

June 24 – I painted all day for James Patterson on the barn and it is a nice day some cloudy & quite warm and at night I rode up as far as Belcher with Wesley McMillen.

June 25 – I painted all day for James Patterson and I finished up for now & it is a nice pleasant day only very hot & clear & Annie came home & I rode my Wheel Home & then Annie & I went over to the church to the Endeavor.

June 26 – In the morning I went over & got Will McNeil & we went up to Glens Falls to play a game of Ball & we got beat bad score 10 to 2 against us and I bought a Harness at $10 & ordered a Wagon to be shipped to Salem for $62.50, $5 paid & $57.50 back.  and it is a nice pleasant day warm or Hot but a Shower went around & it was very cool at night heavy North Wind.

June 27 – In the morning I did’nt get up very early & chored around till noon & then afternoon we went to church & we heard a sermon by Mr. Wiley and then we went down to Bedlam & got out supper a H’s & then I took Annie up to Johnnies & I went on a little further & when I came back to Johnnies I stoped awhile & then we came home & it is a pretty cool & cloudy & windy day.

June 28 – We went to church and we heard a sermon by Mr. McEachron and it was sacrament Sabbath and when we came home a fellow by the name of Robinson was here on his Wheel he stayed for his dinner & then went home and at night I went up to Belcher Prayer meeting George rode up with me & H & Orrie came up awhile & it is a pretty cloudy day some cool to.

June 29 – I helped Dave to Hill potatoes all day over in the back meadow and it is a nice cool day to work some cloudy but cleared off warmer wind in the North.  Potatoes are looking fine it is very dry at present.

June 30 – I helped Dave all day. In the forenoon we hilled potatoes over in the back meadow & in the afternoon we put on poison and it is a very warm day clear at night Dave & I took 2 girls up to Russells to a sociable.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Wednesday, July 1, 1891 – In the forenoon Dave & I put on poison on the potatoes in the back meadow & we got done & in the afternoon we put on poison on the round hill & it is a nice pleasant day very warm at night Dave & I took our folks down to Bedlam to a sociable.

July 2 – In the forenoon I went up to Belcher & got some Vinegar & went up & visited the school and in the afternoon I went down to Argyle to the Town Caucus and at night we went over to the U.P.C.E.S. and it rained in the forenoon pretty cloudy day cleared off at night.

July 3 – In the forenoon I cut some weeds around the House & road and Uncle John C. & Lucy Jane came up a visiting and stayed all day and it is a nice pleasant day warm Hot some cloudy at night Dave & I went up to Edd Pollocks to a sociable had a good time.

July 4 – In the forenoon I chored around and in the afternoon I went down to Bedlam & got H’s wagon & went up & got Jen. W. & Dave got 2 gals & we all went down to the “Oaks” the new Hotel & looked around & from there over to Argyle & got supper & then back to West Hebron & we had a good time & then we went Home and it rained showers all day now & then cool to.

July 5 – We went to church & we heard a sermon by Mr. Robinson and.  and it is a nice cool day pretty cloudy & rained now & then some fine growing time.  quite cool & rained at night.

July 6 – I helped Dave to Hill Potatoes all day down on round hill and it is a nice pleasant day rather cloudy some windy nice day to work.

July 7 – In the forenoon I helped Dave to Hill potatoes down on round hill and in the afternoon it rained and I drove down to Bedlam & then up & took the job of painting the addition that is being put on the church & then up to Belcher & got some Cabbage plants & came down to Johnnies & got my supper & stayed awhile & came home it rained a lot fine rain.

July 8 – In the morning Annie & I went down to H’s & then H & I went to salem & took the cars for Troy & was down to Albany  e went to buy Grain & I went for company we got back to Salem about 3½ o’clock & my new wagon had come so we put it together & brought it home and it cleared off nice & warm.

July 9 – I painted at the trimmings on the out buildings all day & at night Annie & I went over to the Young Peoples meeting and it is a nice pleasant day warm Dave begun mowing up on top of the Hill.

July 10 – I painted all day at the trimmings on the out buildings and I finished and it is a nice pleasant day warm & clear and at night I went out & started to cradle rye it is bad cutting.

July 11 – I cradled rye all day up on the side Hill back of the barn & on top of the Hill & it is very bad cutting twinkled bad & it is a nice Hay day warm & clear and at night I went over to Herbron * & took a damsel out a riding and had a good time I took my new wagon.

July 12 – We went to church & we heard a sermon by Mr. McEachron & it is a nice pleasant day warm & clear after church 2 fellows came along on Wheels & stoped awhile and at night Annie & I went up to Belcher to prayer meeting & we stoped & got Jen & Georgi it kept up till after 10 o’clock.

July 13 – In the morning I bound rye awhile and then I cradled till supper time & then bound awhile again and it is a nice warm day pleasant & some windy Dave is mowing.

July 14 – I bound rye early in the morning & bound until noon & in the afternoon I cut rye awhile and at night I went up & got Jen. & George took them ariding up to Kennedys to see Lottie we stayed awhile had a good time & then came home & it is a nice day clear & very hot.

July 15 – In the forenoon I cut rye & got almost done & they came up a heavy Thunder shower and rained a lot washed a little and after dinner I went over to the church & commenced painting for Mr Brown Annie went or drove down to Bedlam we came home at night.

July 16 – In the morning I went out & finished cutting rye & then I went over to the church & painted all day & Annie drove my Horse down to Bedlam at night she came up to the Endeavor & after it we came home & it is a nice pleasant day warm.

July 17 – I painted all day for Mr Brown on the church and came home at night & went out & bound rye till most 11 o’clock & it is a nice pleasant day warm & some cloudy.  I bound some rye in the morning up on the Hill.

July 18 – In the morning I finished binding rye and then I went over to the church & painted part of the day for Mr Brown & * some & it is a pretty cloudy day it rained some in the afternoon at night I went down to Bedlam & it rained very hard.

July 19 – We went to church and we heard a sermon by Mr McEachron and when we got home H & Orrie was up & after dinner I drove the Black Horse down to the “Oaks” and H.  Dave & Fred Durkee went down & at night I took Dave & Fred up to Belcher to Prayer meeting & I brought Jen & George down home to their House and it is a nice pleasant day warm & clear.

July 20 – In the forenoon I went up & helped Johnnie Williamson to Bind rye and in the afternoon H came up & I rode out to Fort Edward with him & then took the cars for Glens Falls to attend the Summer School 3.15 train and I found my boarding place No. 12 Park St., and it seems to be a good place and Annie is going around a visiting.**  It is a very warm day clear but some cloudy in the forenoon.

July 21 – In the morning I went to school and my room mate Mr Martin went too.  And I am going to take a General course and I have to go 9 o’clock & stay until 1.15 o’clock.  after dinner I went to a ball game and at night I went on the Excursion on a canal boat 25c & it is a nice pleasant day warm & clear too.

July 22 – I attended the summer school and after dinner I took a nap and then I rode on the Electric cars down to Sandy Hill and at night I went with Mr Martin up to a Reception at the Assembly Hall.  It is a nice pleasant day warm & clear very warm too.

July 23 – I went to school and it is a nice warm day only very rainy it is a cloudy day the sun shone awhile in the morning and in the afternoon I sat around the House I wrote Annie & Jen*** & wrote letters and at night Mr Martin & I went to the Philharmonic Club it was good.

July 24 – I went to school and it rained all forenoon nearly cleared off in the afternoon very warm.  In the afternoon I went down with a lot of teachers to the Cave* & went through it and then went through the Saw Mills and at night I went to the Salvation Army.

July 25 – I attended school and in the afternoon I stayed around here awhile & went up to the school building awhile and at night a man by the name of Mr. John & I went down to Fort Edward on the Electric cars & stayed awhile and it is a nice pleasant day but rained some in the morning but cleared off & got some cool at night.

July 26 – In the forenoon Mr Martin & I went to the Baptist church and after dinner we went to the Young mens Christian Association & then to the W.C.T.U. &  from there to the Episcopal.  & at night I went to the Salvation Army and it is a nice pleasant day warm & some cloudy.

July 27 – In the morning I went to Saratoga on the Excursion and had a fine time we visited the Pompeia House & the Congress park we took a lunch with us they was a party of 6 of us.  And we went at 9 o’clock & came home at 5.30.  It is a nice pleasant day warm & pleasant or clear.

July 28 -  I went to school and in the afternoon I went down around the lime Kilns and the stone querries and looked around and at night I stayed in and it is a nice pleasant day.  warm & clear.  I received 3 letters one from Annie l from H & I from Ema Hague.

July 29 – I went to school and in the afternoon I went down to the ball game the Greenwich with the Glens Falls score Greenwich 3 to Glens Falls 2 it was a good game and at night we went to the Reception at the Assembly Hall had a fair time and it is a nice pleasant day warm & some windy very dusty and I got 1 letter it was from Georgia.

July 30 – I went to school and in the afternoon I stayed around the house most of the time I went back up to the school building awhile & it is a very cloudy day & rained nearly all day and very hard part of the time and it is a cool rain at night Mr Martin & I went to the reading lecture by Mr. Churchill at the Opera House.

July 31 – I went to school and in the afternoon I went up to the school building & heard a lecture and I took a nap and at night Mr. Martin & I took or went to a Reception at a private House by the name of Mrs. ** and it is a nice pleasant day after the rain it is rather cool.

 

Saturday, August 1, 1891 – I went to school and in the afternoon I went up to the school building to a lecture & it is a pretty cloudy day & rather cool too at night we had a small party here had a good time.  I received a letter from Annie & I answered it to.

Aug. 2 – In the morning Mr Martin & I went to the friends church or the quaker church & then we came home & took a nap.  After dinner We went down to Fort Edward on the Electric cars I met Irwin Keyworth down there & he paid me some money that he owed me and when we came back I went to the Presbyterian Christian Endeavor.  and it is a nice pleasant day clear & warm to.

Aug. 3 – In the morning I took the Excursion we went on the cars to Caldwell & then we got on the Steamer “Horicon” & went down to the foot of the Lake & came back to the Hotel Sagamore & stopped & got dinner & stayed about 3½ hours & then came home we got home about 10 o’clock & we had a fine time.  It was a pleasant day & warm & very still.

Aug. 4 – I went to school and I rec’d a letter from Mary. W. and in the afternoon I answered it & took a nap & sat around and it rained all afternoon & quite hard part of the time & it is a pretty cloudy day some cool and at night Mr Martin & I went to a Concert to the Opera.

Aug. 5 – I went to school and in the afternoon I went up to the school room & listened to two lectures.  and Daveie & Jessie F. came out here.  they brought out 4 gal. jars of butter we sold it for 16c per # cash.  And they went home about 6½ o’clock and it is a pretty cloudy day rained some in the morning.  At night I went up to the reception in the Assembly room I escorted Miss Griffin Home.

Aug. 6 – I went to school and in the afternoon I went to a ball game it was Glens Falls with the Troy boys score Glens Falls 7 Troy 2 it was a very good game and at night I went up to the Assembly room where the New York teachers met & had a good time & got a badge.  It was Glens Falls S.S. ’91 New York.  It is a nice pleasant day quite warm & clear.

Aug. 7 – I went to school and in the afternoon I went around with Mr John through the Shirt & collar Factory and I took a nap. and at night Mr. Martin & I went to the Lecture and it is a nice pleasant day very warm rather cloudy part of the day.

Aug. 8 – I went to school and in the afternoon I packed up and took the cars for Fort Edward and got a chance out to the Hook & then came a foot the rest of the way and I sent one valies out to Argyle & when I got home I went down to Bedlam & got Annie and it is a nice pleasant day warm & clear.

Aug. 9 – Annie & I went to church & we heard a sermon by Mr. McEachron and it is a pretty cloudy day but no rain and at night Dave & I went up to Belcher to Prayermeeting and it is a warm day.

Aug. 10 – In the morning I took Annie down to Bedlam & I got my Horse shawd and H took me up to Everrett Williamson’s to see about getting a school but did’nt take it and when we came back I stayed for dinner & then went up to see Billy McWhorter & then up to Belcher but did’nt take no school.  At night I went down to Argyle to get a valise of mine & took 2 gals out a riding & it is a nice pleasant day very warm & clear.

Aug. 11 – I helped Davie to cradle Oats all day we got done at supper time and it is a very hot day 92 in shade and at night Norm came down & he & I went down to Argyle & took 2 damsels out riding and it is a pleasant day only very hot.

Aug. 12 – In the morning H came along early & he & I went out to Glens Falls I went to the school in the forenoon & in the afternoon H & I went to the Horse race and it was the last day of Summer School and it is a pretty cloudy day some hot too rained a very little out there.

Aug. 13 – In the forenoon I went down to Bedlam after Annie & I drove up to Everrett W’s but did’nt make a trade yet and in the afternoon I painted on the stoop & finished the Hog pen.  and at night Annie & I went over to the Young Peoples Meeting and it is a nice pleasant day very hot Davie finished harvesting.

Aug. 14 – In the morning I painted on the stoop or lattice work and about 10 o’clock we went up to Bennie Shields funeral and it was a large funeral and when we came back I painted the stoop over again and at night We went up to Jenkins’s to a party had a good time it rained on us while coming home & it is a nice pleasant day clear & very warm.

Aug. 15 – In the forenoon I chored around helped Dave to put up some rye and I washed my wagon & in the afternoon Dave & I went up to Belcher & played ball awhile & when we came home or at night we went down to Bedlam & it is a pretty cloudy day warm & rained quite a lot too.

Aug. 16 – We went to church & we heard a sermon by Mr. McEachron and his text was Revelation 22 chapter & the 20 verse and it is a nice pleasant day warm & clear after dinner John Anderson & Dewey C. & Myself went down to the big lake on our Bicycles & at night Dave Annie & I went over to our church to Union meeting the church was full.

Aug. 17 – IN the morning I went over to Billy McWhorters & painted on the church all day for Leyou Brown painted blinds part of the day and it is a nice pleasant day warm & clear a night I came home.  Davie took a load of rye out to the Fort for me  * bu. at 75¢ per bu.

Aug. 18 – In the forenoon I layed some stone wall down along the Hog pasture and in the afternoon Annie & I went out to Fort Edward and we did’nt get home very early it rained a lot out to the fort but it did’nt much here.  it is very warm & some cloudy.

Aug. 19 – In the forenoon I layed stonewall & painted some & chored around and in the afternoon I went down to the Lake to the “Oaks” and stayed awhile and then came home & at night Annie & I went down to the South Argyle church to the Endeavor Convention and it is a nice pleasant day warm & dusty to.

Aug. 20 – In the morning we went down to the South Argyle church and stayed all day & in the Evening too to the convention of the Christian Endeavor we got our dinner & supper to and they was a lot there and in the afternoon I went over to the Lake awhile to the Picnic at the “Oaks” & it is a nice pleasant day warm & very dusty.

Aug. 21 – In the morning I finished the fence along the Hog pasture & finished painting the lattice work and then Annie & I went up to Uncle Daves a visiting stayed all day  In the afternoon Norm & I went up to Belcher to a ball game I umpired at night Annie & I went over to the Endeavor & then came home it is some cloudy it rained a little at night.

Aug. 22 – In the forenoon I cut brush around the fences the boys helped some & in the afternoon Annie & I drove down to Argyle & at night we went down to Bedlam to choir

meeting and it is a nice pleasant day very warm & clear too.

Aug. 23 – We went to church & we heard a sermon by Mr. McEachron and after dinner Dewey Cornell came over & He & I started for the Lake but as we got to Mahaffys he broke his little wheel so we had to come back.  At night Davie Annie & I went up to Belcher to Prayer meeting and it is a pretty cloudy warm rained a very little at night.

Aug. 24 – In the morning I rode my wheel down to Bedlam and got it repaired  a little & when I came back I picked a few berries 4 qts. & then I chored around we had a shower about 5 o’clock and it is very warm  At night Annie & I went up to Johnnies to choir meeting and it rained some and Davie sold the lambs & sheep.

Aug. 25 – I chored around the boys & I put a fence around the Grapes to keep the hens away and picked the plums and in the afternoon Annie went down to Bedlam & Will McK.& I went up to Belcher to a Ball game or picnic & at night Annie & I went over to the church to a meeting and it is a nice pleasant day warm.

Aug. 26 – In the morning I drove down to Bedlam early.  & Johnnie Williamson &

Mary, Jen, George & Harry* all came down a visiting & stayed all day and George & Jen stayed till in the Evening George stayed all night I took Jen home after night & George McEachron & his Wife came down awhile & Charley Robinson came over awhile & it is a nice pleasant day cloudy & warm.  Daves old Horse died so we had to bury it.

Aug. 27 – In the forenoon it rained The thresher came to thresh Davies Oats ** & I stayed around the house & chored around.  In the afternoon Annie, Georgia, & I went out to Fort Edward & I took the Electric Cars & went up to Glens Falls & got home about 7½ o’clock & then we went over to the Endeavor & after it was out we took Georgia home & then we came home.  It rained some cleared off at night cooler.

Aug. 28 – I helped Dave to thresh Oats all day and we got done we had 460 bu. and it rained some in the forenoon but cleared off in the afternoon cooler.  At night Annie & I went up to a party at Mr. Will Kennedys they was a lot there I got it up***.  we all had a good time.

Aug. 29 – In the forenoon I washed my wagon & chored around did’t get up till 10 o’clock and in the afternoon Dave & I went out to Fort Edward to look at some sheep & get some peaches.  at night I took a ride over to Hebron Centre and it is a nice cool day some cloudy.

Aug. 30 – We went to church & heard a sermon by Mr. Hood and it is a pretty cloudy & cool day it rained a little in the afternoon but it did’nt mount to much.

Aug. 31 – In the morning I took some butter up to Belcher at 17¢ per # and got the grass seed and when I came back the boys & I cut brush along the road & in the afternoon we cut some brush and I painted the tin roof.  and chored around & at night we went down to **** to Bedlam to practice singing.  & it is a pretty cloudy day some cool.  no rain.

 

Tuesday, September 1, 1891 – In the morning we went over to the church to the “Centenial” and the church was more than full and we had a great time feeding them the singing went of all right and about 4 o’clock we had a Thunder Shower it rained a lot.  very muddy coming home I washed my wagon when I got home.

Sept. 2 – I went down to the Cambridge Fair all alone and they was a big crowd there and they was a man went up in a balloon and came down in a parachutt and I got home about 7 o’clock and it is a nice day warm & clear some cloudy & muddy in the morning.

Sept. 3 – In the morning Annie & I went up early to Johnnies & we went in the load down to Cambridge Fair they was 17 of us and we all had a good time.  We give Johnnie over $5.50 to take us down & it is a nice pleasant day warm & clear.  they was a lot to the Fair we got home about ll o’clock.

Sept. 4 – In the forenoon I chored around cut some brush etc. & in the afternoon Annie & I went down to H’s & stayed till after night & went to the lecture at Mr. Wileys church and it is a nice day it got cooler at night quite cool.

Sept. 5 – In the forenoon I sowed the field down above the road to rye 5 acres & I sowed part of the grass-seed and then it came on rain & in the afternoon Dave & I went over to Norm Mahaffys after some plums.  they was gone away so we came home & then went over in Hebron above Salem looking after sheep & it rained a lot some cooler at night too.

Sept. 6 – We went to church and we heard a sermon by Mr. Hood and it is a pretty cloudy day it rained quite a shower before night awhile & at night Dave & I went up to Belcher to prayer meeting and it was warm & very muddy.

Sept. 7 – In the morning I sowed the rest of the grass-seed down in the field above the road and then I started for school I am teaching in Dist No. 11 in Hebron I put my Horse in Mr. Rogers barn it is handy to the school House I had only 19 schollars and when I came home I went up & sowed some rye in the long-field & it is a nice pleasant day some cloudy & cool acts some like Fall it is quite muddy now.

Sept. 8 – In the morning I sowed the rest of the rye up in the long field and I taught school up Black Creek and when I came home I sowed the grass seed on the rye up in the long-field and it is a nice pleasant day some cloudy & cool the mud is drying up.  When I came home I stoped in Bedlam & got a tooth pulled.  I sent my watch out to the Fort & got it cleaned by Johnnie Williamson. $1. price.

Sept. 9 – I taught school up in Dist. No. 11 in Hebron and I drove over.  Annie went to the County Fair with Johnnie Williamsons folks & it is a nice pleasant day warm & clear but cool in the morning.  Davie started north after some sheep.

Sept. 10 – I was sick all day I was in bed nearly all day Will Madison was up twice I sent for him early in the morning I was’nt to teach to day I intended going to the Fair but got cheated out of it and I was pretty sick it was something like inflamation of the bowels and it is a nice pleasant day warm & dusty.

Sept. 11 – I got up in the morning & went out & done a few chores.  I was better but pretty weak and I stayed up around & finally went out to the County Fair I took Annie out with me and got home a little after dark I felt a little old but felt pretty well it was the last day of the Fair but they was quite a lot their it is warm & very dusty.

Sept. 12 – In the forenoon I cut some brush fixed up two barways & chored around & in the afternoon I went over a bove the Hook or Evansville & played a game of ball Belcher & Hooks the score stood Belcher 19 to 11 I think I played on Belcher side and George & Will went with me and when we came home Dave & I went up to Harve Reynolds & looked at his sheep they are for sale it is a nice pleasant day warm clear & dusty.

Sept. 13 – We went to church & we heard a sermon by Mr. White & his text was Luke the 15 chapter & the 32 verse and it rained as we came home and it is a pretty cloudy day warm and about night we had a heavy Thunder Shower it rained a lot.

Sept. 14 – I taught up in Dist. No. 11 in Hebron and I drove up and it is a nice pleasant day some cloudy & cool too.  in the morning I washed my wagon and at night I cut a few brush down along the creek in the follow.

Sept. 15 – I taught school up in Dist. No. 11 in Hebron & in the morning & at night I cut some brush around the fences and it is a pretty cloudy & cool day but did’nt rain much.  I drove up to school.  I had a new scholar Dave got some cider made.

Sept. 16 – I taught school up in Dist. No. 11 in Hebron & I had a nother new scholar and I drove up and in the morning I cut brush around the fences and at night I cut some brush down in the swamp.  It is a nice day only pretty cloudy & some cool.  Dave begun digging some potatoes.

Sept. 17 – I taught school up in Dist No 11 in Hebron & I drove over & Annie went down to Orrie’s with me at night I stopped at H’s & got supper & then Annie & I went from there up to the Endeavor & then we came home & it is a nice pleasant day warm but cool at night.  & Davies man (Berry Grant) came on to work.

Sept. 18 – I taught school up Black Creek in Dist. Sept. 19 – In the forenoon I sawed some old wood & cut brush up around the fences & in the afternoon I cut some brush down in the swamp & piled the brush that I had cut and washed my wagon & then I helped Dave to load up a load of potatoes & then I washed my good Harness & then I helped Dave to cut corn awhile.  & it it is a nice pleasant day clear & some cooler Dave took a load of potatoes down to Salem.

Sept. 20 – We went to church & we heard a sermon by Mr. McEachron & his text was

l Peter 2 chapter & the 11 verse and after meeting was out we went down to Hs & Orrie’s & stayed till night & then went to the Union meeting at the Methodist church & then we came home and it is a very warm day clear but some cool at night.  When we went to church we stopped & seen Martin Rogers he is sick.

Sept. 21 – I taught school up in Dist No11 in Hebron & I drove over and it is a nice pleasant day warm & clear and Dave took a load of potatoes down to Salem at 25¢ per bu. it is quite dusty.

Sept. 22 – I taught school up in Dist. No 11 in Hebron and in the morning I cut a few brush & at night I cut a few around the corn field and Dave went with load of potatoes to Salem at 25c per bu. and it is a very hot day hot as any time in summer & clear too.

Sept. 23 – I taught school up in Dist No 11 in Hebron & I drove the cart & In the morning & at night I cut & split some old wood and it is a very warm day clear & dusty & quite hot & Dave & the boys drew the stack of hay on top of the Hill down to the barn 7 loads.

Sept. 24 -  (top of page: “First time New room”) -  I taught school up in Dist No 11 in Hebron & I drove a Horse and at night Annie & I drove over to the church to the Christian Endeavor & we went into the new room for the first time and it is a nice pleasant day warm & clear & very dusty.

Sept. 26 – In the forenoon I fixed fence up along Joe Boyds hill in the back field & Uncle John C. came up & helped me to fix some fence around that back field so he could turn his colt in and in the afternoon we finished the fence & Bert McDougall & I divide of the line fence up in the meadow on top of the Hill and then I went over & dug a few potatoes in the back meadow and it is a nice pleasant day quite warm and at night Dave & I went over beyond Argyle & bought 4 pigs at $6.00 8 weeks old.  We did’nt bring them Home.

Sept. 27 – We went to church & we heard a sermon by Mr. McEachron and his text was in Genesis and the smaller classes went into the small room and after dinner John McFarland came along & he & I went or took a ride on our bicycles down around by the lake and it is a nice pleasant day warm & some cloudy but cleared off.  We took Georgia W. home from church and at night I went up to Belcher prayermeeting Georgia & Jen went up with me.

Sept. 28 – I taught school up in Dist No 11 in Hebron and it is a nice pleasant day warm & very dusty and Dave begun to pick apples & I had another new scholar and Annie went down to Bedlam and I went up & cut a few bushes at night on top of the Hill in the meadow.

Sept. 29 – I taught school up in Dist No 11 in Hebron and it is a nice day we had a shower about 2 o’clock & then cleared off colder at night.  At night Dave, Annie & I went over to the church to the new room to a sociable and it was quite cool.

Sept. 30 – I taught school up in Dist No 11 in Hebron and I drove Annies mare and Annie went down to Hs & Orries & stayed till I came home.  And Dave took my Horse & went out to Fort Edward & he got 4 pigs at $6. & the boys worked on the rode in the forenoon & it is a clear day but rather cool & windy.

Thursday, October 1, 1891 – (at top of page: “First Frost.  Light too”) – I taught school up in Dist. No. 11 in Hebron & I rode my Bicycle & it went very good and it is a nice pleasant day clear we had a light White frost last the first of the season and Dave is digging Potatoes & picking apples and at night Annie & went over the Endeavor We had a fire in the school House.*

Oct. 2 – I taught school up in Dist. No. 11 in Hebron and I drove my Horse and it is a nice day pleasant & warm some cool in the morning I had a fire on in the school House nearly all day and Dave is picking apples & digging potatoes They was a little frost in the morning.

Oct. 3 – In the forenoon I finished sawing up old wood between the barn & wagon house & split some & picked a few pears & chored around and in the afternoon I went up to Martin Rogers to a bee where they dug potatoes for him & I dug we got most done they was 7 in all there.  and it is terribly warm clear & hot & dry and at night I went up to Johnnie Williamson & got some grapes & went on up to Belcher & then came home.

Oct. 4 - We went to church & we heard a sermon by mr McEachron & his text Acts 3 chapter and it is a very very warm day clear & dusty & very dry water is getting very low nearby everywhere now.  no signs of rain  At night Dave & I went up to Belcher to Prayermeeting & Georgia W. rode up with us  & Jen came home from meeting with us.

Oct. 5 – I taught school up in Dist No 11 in Hebron & I drove up and at morning & night I chored around & cut some old wood and it is a nice pleasant day warm & very dry in the afternoon it got some cooler.

Oct. 6 – I taught school up in Dist No 11 in Hebron and I drove up & it is a nice pleasant day some cooler and rather cloudy and it looked a little like rain and H brought Orrie & the babe up** & left her here.

Oct. 7 -  I taught school up in Dist No 11 in Hebron & I drove up there & it is a pretty cloudy day cool & it rained a little nearly all day but did’nt amount to much and at or after night it came on rain quite heavy.

Oct. 8 – I taught school up in Dist No 11 in Hebron and it is a pretty cool day some windy and at night Davie & I went over to the Young peoples meeting at the church & it was quite cool.  We had a fine rain last night it rained some in the morning it cleared off quite cool.

Oct. 9 – I taught school up in Dist No 11 in Hebron & it is a nice pleasant day only it is cool some windy & Orrie & Annie went out to Fort Edward and and at night we all went up to Johnnies and stayed awhile and it is clear & some cool.

Oct. 10 – In the morning I got up about 4 o’clock & Dave & I went over in Salem to A X.

McMillens & got or bought 55 sheep at $190 and we brought them home and in the afternoon I helped Dave to dig potatoes down on round hill and they are very light and at night Dave & I went down to Bedlam & it is a nice pleasant day we had a heavy frost in the morning very white we most frooze in the morning.  & Annie took Orrie down home.

Oct. 11 – I went to church all alone and I heard a sermon by Mr. McEachron and Annie stayed at home & kept house and it is a very cold windy raw day & at night Dave & I went up to meeting but we did’nt go in & Aggie & a another girl that was here went up with us it was quite cold.

Oct. 12 – I taught school up in Dist No 11 in Hebron and I drove over & in the morning we had quite a freeze it frooze the ground some & in the morning we painted or marked the sheep & tared them & it is a cool day some clear warmer at night.

Oct. 13 – I taught school up in Dist No 11 in Hebron I drove up and it is a pretty cool raw day & some cloudy it looked like rain but did’nt & Dave is digging potatoes down on round Hill & they are very light.

Oct. 14 – I taught school up in Dist No 11 in Hebron & I drove up and it was cloudy in the morning but cleared off and was a nice pleasant day and Annie rode down to Bedlam & stayed till night at Orries.  Dave is digging potatoes on round Hill.

Oct. 15 – I taught school up in Dist. No 11 in Hebron and I drove up and it is a nice pleasant day some cool & some cloudy it rained they was a Thunder shower went around and it did’nt rain much here.  At night Annie & I went over to the young peoples meeting.

Oct. 16 – I taught school up in Dist No 11 in Hebron and I drove up and it is a nice pleasant day some cool & cloudy and Dave is digging potatoes down on round Hill & they are very light and he has got pretty near done.

Oct. 17 – In the forenoon I helped Dave to dig potatoes & he got done and they were terrible light and in the afternoon I helped Dave to husk corn in the barn and it is a nice pleasant day it is pleasant & warm & at night I went down to Argyle.

Oct. 18 – I went to church and Annie went to and we heard a sermon by Mr. McEachron & his text was in Isaiah and it is a nice cool day some windy & cloudy & at night Dave & I went up to Belcher Prayermeeting & Jen & Georgia rode up with us & it was a fine night.

Oct. 19 – I taught school up in Dist No. 11 in Hebron and I drove & my horse is quite lame he got Kicked by some means last Friday.  It is a nice pleasant day warm & Dave got the corn all in and I had two more new scholars.  I brought up 2 bu. of corn from W.H. for Billy Liddle & in the morning I took Uncle John C’s colt down home. Or part way.

Oct. 20 – I taught school up in Dist No 11 in Hebron and I drove Annie’s mare my horse’s leg is swollen up terrible & he is quite lame and it is a pretty cloudy day some cool & it rained quite a lot and I brought home some meal for Billy Liddle.

Oct. 21 – I taught school up in Dist No 11 in Hebron and I drove Annie’s mare & Georgie Williamson rode up to Everetts from bedlam with me and my Horse’s leg is not swollen quite so bad as it was and it is a pretty cloudy day it rained quite a lot last night I guess & it has cleared off some colder.

Oct. 22 – I taught school up in Dist No 11 in Hebron & I drove Annies mare my horse is some better and Georgie W rode over home with me from Everett’s & at night she went over to prayermeeting with us & then went home & Harry W. came home with us & stayed all night and it is a nice pleasant day only some cool and Dave went to salem with a load of potatoes at 37¢ a bu.

Oct. 23 – I taught school up in Dist No 11 in Hebron and Harry went with me and we drove Annie’s Mare & my horse is getting better and Annie went down to Orries & stayed till night & then came home with us and it is a nice pleasant day only rather cool & windy.  Harry stayed all night.

 

 

Oct. 24 – In the forenoon the boys & us whipped the walnut trees & picked them we got about 2 bu. in all I guess & Dave took the cider apples down to Bedlam & brought home the cider and and in the afternoon I chored around & Dave & I took some rails up on top of the Hill & then Annie, Harry & I went down to H’s & stayed till after night & it is a very windy day cool & some cloudy Harry stayed all night.

Oct. 25 – We went to church & we heard a sermon by Mr. McEachron & Harry went to church with us and then he went home with his folks and after dinner Dewey Cornell & I took a ride on our Wheels up around by Belcher & at night I went up to Belcher to prayermeeting with Dave & it is a pretty cool day it frooze quite hard last night.

Oct. 26 – I taught school up in Dist No 11 in Hebron & I drove Annie’s mare my Horse is getting better and it is a nice day rather cloudy and it rained a little in the morning but cleared off at night we had a bee hucking walnuts. Aggie & Mattie.

Oct. 27 – I taught up in Dist No 11 in Hebron & I drove Annie’s mare my horse is getting better & it snowed & rained nearly all day but the snow melted as fast as it came it is a cool windy nasty day it did’nt rain so very hard any of the time it quit at night.

Oct. 28 – I taught school up in Dist No 11 in Hebron and I drove Annie’s mare my horse is doing well and it is a pretty cool day some cloudy & cold wind it frooze quite hard last night & will be colder at or to night it is cleared off & the air is quite cold.

Oct. 29 – I taught school up in Dist No 11 in Hebron and I drove Annies mare my horse is about well and Annie rode down to Orries & stayed and at night we got our supper down there & then we went up to prayer-meeting & from there home & it is a nice pleasant day warm.

Oct. 30 – I taught school up to Dist 11 in Hebron and I drove Annies Mare and it is a nice pleasant day and Dave is drawing potatoes to Salem at 35¢ a bu. and it is nice going now.

Oct. 31 – In the forenoon George & I went up on top of the hill in the Meadow & went laying over the line fence and we burnt some brush & the fire got into the fence & into the woods we had to get some help & had an offle time getting it out it burnt a lot of rails and in the afternoon I & Annie went to church & we drove my horse he is about well and we came home by bedlam and it is a nice warm day some cloudy & rained a little at night We heard a sermon by Mr. McEachron & his text was in Titus & Eliza came up & stayed all night.

 

Sunday, November 1, 1891 – We went to church & we heard a sermon by Mr. McEachron and his text was in Titus & it was Sacrament Sabbath and they was 5 joined the church and it is a pretty cloudy & windy day and quite cool to we had quite wind storm last night it blowed down some fence.

Nov. 2 – I taught school up in Dist No 11 in Hebron and I drove my horse for the first time to school in nearly two weeks and it is a nice pleasant day clear & rather cold at night Davie took a load of potatoes out to Fort Edward 32c per bu.

Nov. 3 – In the forenoon George & I fixed fence up along the meadow & the woods up on top of the Hill and in the afternoon I went down to Argyle & it was election I voted for Every Republican but sheriff.  I went for John Willett the vote stood about as *

Nov. 4 – I taught school up in Dist No 11 in Hebron and I drove up and it is nice going it was quite cold last night it frooze hard and Dave is hauling away the potatoes at 35¢ per bu. nice weather clear & dry.

Nov. 5 – I taught school up in Dist No 11 in Hebron & I drove my horse and Annie rode down as far as Orries & stayed there until night & I stoped & got my supper & we went from there up to the Christian Endeavor and I did’nt teach from recess in the forenoon but went down to Jimmie* McCloys funeral and Ida Rogers kept school while I was gone and it is a nice pleasant day rather cool quite cold at night it freezes pretty hard.

Nov. 6 – I taught school up in Dist No 11 in Hebron & I drove up and Annie went down to Orrie’s & stayed until school was out or until I came home and it is a nice pleasant day it is quite cold mornings & nights Dave took a load of potatoes down to salem the roads are fine now.

Nov. 7 – In the forenoon I chored around at one thing & another I put my apples in the cellar what I am going to Winter 3 barrels and in the afternoon I chored around & helped Dave to draw up some old wood & chore around and it is a nice pleasant day warm but cold in the morning & at night Frank Gibson & Jen Williamson came down here to practice for the aniversary at the church in singing.

Nov. 8 – I went to church & Annie did too & we heard a sermon by Mr. McEachron and his text was in 2nd. Corinthians and H. & Orrie came up here and stayed for dinner and it is a nice pleasant day warm & clear & very dry the roads are fine.

Nov. 9 – I taught school up in Dist No 11 in Hebron and I drove over and at night Annie & I went up to Johnnie Williamson’s to practice for to morrow night and it is a nice pleasant day fine going it is dusty.

Nov. 10 -  I taught school up in Dist No 11 in Hebron and I drove my good wagon and it was the last day of the Fall term it lasted 9 weeks I give the scholars some candy & cards & the winners in the spelling class got a prize and Annie rode down as far as H’s & stayed all day & I stopped at night & got supper & then we went up to the church to the sociable as anniversary they was a lot there.  It is a nice pleasant day warm & some cloudy quite windy at night I had some company at school

Nov. 11 – In the morning I layed stone wall down along the road below the barn & it came on rain in a little while & then Dave & I went to work & put in sleepers in the cow stable & laid the floor and chored around and it rained a lot it was a fine rain the wind blew very hard in the forenoon & at night I went down most to Argyle & made a dame a call.

Nov. 12 – I fixed fence down on top of the round Hill along the line fence it was putting on riders on the wall & worked at it awhile before noon & after too & it rained quite a lot very nasty & muddy and Dave took a load of potatoes and at night Dave & I went over to the young peoples meeting and it is a pretty cloudy day.  In the morning I picked a few walnuts.

Nov. 13 – I finished fixing fence down on round Hill and layed up a piece of stone wall and in the afternoon Eliza & I went over to Mr Duncan McDougall’s funeral & Annie went down to Bedlam and it is a nice warm day some cool at night I went up Coot Hill way & took a damsel out a riding.  In the morning I went up to Bedlam on business.

Nov. 14 – In the morning I fixed up some board fence that was blown down and then I went down along the road & fixed and layed stone wall & I did so in the afternoon or part of the time and it is a nice day only cool and at night I went down to Bedlam to Band meeting we are trying to start up again.

Nov. 15 – We went to church & we heard a sermon by Mr. McEachron and it is a nice day warm & pleasant frooze a little last night at night Annie & I went down to Billy Liddles and seen the folks and we saw the Elipse on the moon it was total for an hour I should think it was dark as though they was’nt no moon.

Nov. 16 – I layed stone wall down along the road below the barn and chored around nearly all day.  The apple men came to head up the apples they was 5 of them and they worked after night the apples are decaying quite fast and it is a pretty cloudy day & quite windy too looks like rain.

Nov. 17 – In the forenoon I picked some Walnuts & then layed some stone wall down along the road below the barn and it came on rain about noon & rained most all afternoon & we hard a very heavy wind it blew down a lot of fence and it got colder at night.  The apple men got the apples all put up before noon 41 barrels.

Nov. 18 – In the forenoon Dave & I took a load of Hay over to Mr. Rogers where I keep by horse when I am at school and in the afternoon I went over and visited the brick school and and at night I went down Argyle way & made a girl a visit & it is a very cool raw windy day it snowed a little.

Nov. 19 – In the morning Eliza & Annie went out to Fort Edward and I went down to Goose Island school a visiting & in the afternoon I took a ride up around by Belcher & landed at Shannon’s school where Rob. McWhorter is teaching & made a visit and at night Annie & I went over to the Young peoples meeting and it is a nice day some cool frooze hard last night.

Nov. 20 – In the forenoon I chored around & fixed some window lights in & in the afternoon I took Annie down to Bedlam & left her there she is going to Albany to morrow with H & Orrie and at night Will Williamson & I went out to Fort Edward and it is a nice warm day some cloudy.  Eliza is staying with me.

Nov. 21 – In the forenoon I fixed fence one place & another and in the afternoon I chored around & about 3 o’clock I started for Vermont and I went over beyond West Rupert about 4 miles and had a good time.  And it rained at night but I did’nt get very Wet and it is a beautiful day warm & pleasant and Dave took the last load of apples away to Fort Miller.

Nov. 22 – Eliza & I went to church and we heard a sermon by Mr. Shortt and his text was in two different places and at night Norm W. & I went up to Hartford to see 2 girls we had a good time and we did’nt get home till quite late and we went up to Prayermeeting in Hartford and it is a nice warm day.  very cloudy & it rained a lot at night.

Nov. 23 – I begun teaching again up in Dist No 11 in Hebron the Winter term and I drove up Annie’s Mare and it is very muddy and it rained a lot at night & quite windy and it is quite warm.

Nov. 24 – I taught school up in Dist No 11 in Hebron & I drove my horse and at night stoped for Annie at H’s & she came home with me and it is a very cloudy day it rained some & is very muddy.

Nov. 25 – I taught school up in Dist No 11 in Hebron & I drove my horse and it is a nice day some windy & cool and it is very muddy cold at night & we all went down to Billys awhile at night.

Nov. 26 – In the morning Will & I went over to John Guthries & got a Buck & we couldn’t carry him in the wagon very well so I led him down to Bedlam & Dave was down & he carried him home in a Double wagon & in the afternoon Dave & Will drew out manure & George & I made a sheep rack in the stable & in the shed for to feed the sheep hay and it was cold & rough in the morning but got some warmer and Ema & her children came up & stayed all day and at night Annie & I went over to the young peoples meeting.

Nov. 27 – I taught school up in Dist No 11 in Hebron and I drove up and it snowed last  night about an inch or more & it thawed away nearly & it was very muddy and Captain Orr was here when I got home & he stayed all night  he is canvassing for a Nursery firm I took an gave an Order for 25 apple trees 15 spys & 10 Greenings = $6.50.

Nov. 28 - In the forenoon I chored around and George & I sat the posts in the barn yard for to make a fence to put the sheep in 2 flocks & it snowed some nearly all day and it snowed about 2 inches and it is a pretty cool day it didnt thaw much & at night I went down to Band meeting & Annie rode down to H’s.

Nov. 29 – We went to church & we heard a sermon by Mr Wiley & his text was in l Kings 13 chapter & the 4 & 5 verses I think and it is a very cold raw day very rough & it did’nt thaw much at night Dave got up the sheep and it still keeps cold.

Nov. 30 – I taught school up in Dist No 11 in Hebron and I drove over and I left my wagon at W. Hebron to get fixed and it is a very cold morning below zero the Lake was frozen over and it is very rough going and I had 2 new scholars and it is a pretty cool day some cloudy.

 

Tuesday, December 1, 1891 – I taught school up in Dist No 11 in Hebron & I drove over & I started early & got my horse shawd at W. H. and it is a nice pleasant day some warmer it thawed some in the sun & Dave brought home a load of Coal for us.

Dec. 2 – I taught school up in Dist No 11 in Hebron & I drove my horse on a cart and I found the roads in good shape it was rather cool last night we have got the sheep out again and it is a nice pleasant day thawed a little.

Dec. 3 – I taught school over in Dist No 11 in Hebron & I drove my horse on a cart and it was very good going it was a little muddy and at night Dave, Annie & I went over to the young people’s meeting and we drove M & S it is a fine day warm & thawed quite alot

some snow yet though.

Dec. 4 – I taught school over in Dist No 11 in Hebron and I drove over and it is very muddy going and at night the wind blew terrible it took the fences a flying & Orrie went down home H came up after her.

Dec. 5 – I chored around all day Dave & I drew out or cleaned the back House* we drew the boat & contents up into the orchard and we fixed the fence in the barn yard & made some more sheep racks and I carried some wood into the wagon House and it is a nice warm day only rather cloudy & at night I rode down to Bedlam with Davie & I went to band meeting.  In the morning I went up to Belcher on business.

Dec. 6 – (top of page; “2 rings given me by Eliza McMillen”) – They was no preaching at our church so Annie & I went down to H’s & Orries and I went up to the Reformed Presbyterian & after dinner Annie & I went over to the Methodist church and both ministers had their texts was in the Psalms and then we came home and it is a nice warm day some cloudy and very muddy.

Dec. 7 – I taught up in Dist No 11 in Hebron & I drove my horse up and it is pretty muddy going it rained a little in the morning it is a pretty cloudy day & warm to.  At night I went down to Billy’s awhile.

Dec. 8 – I taught school up in Dist No 11 in Hebron & I drove my horse and it is a nice pleasant day warm but cold & rough in the morning and the roads are getting pretty good again.  At night I went down to Billys awhile.

Dec. 9 – I taught school up to Dist No 11 in Hebron & I drove Annie’s mare and the roads are pretty good now and I had only ½ hour at noon & so let school out quite early and at night I went back up to Mr Rogers to an anniversary I took a damsel they was a lot there I had a very good time & it is a nice pleasant day warm Dave took a load of  potatoes. 

Dec. 10 - I taught school up in Dist No 11 in Hebron & I drove my own horse and the roads are very good now and it is a nice pleasant day warm & clear and at night Dave Annie & I went over to the church to the Young peoples meeting and Dave took the Turkeys away at 11¢ a lb. live weight.  13 I think.

Dec. 11 – I taught school up in Dist No 11 in Hebron & I drove my own horse & at night Annie & I went to a party up to Peter Cullins we had a good time and Annie & Eliza went down to Argyle and it is a nice pleasant day warm & the roads are nice now.

Dec. 12 -  I chored around all day I carried or drawed some stove wood into the wagon house from the wood-shed and washed my wagon & lined my stable horse blanket and it is a nice pleasant day warm & clear at night I went down (or Annie & I did) to bedlam to choir meeting and when we came home I went down to Argyle on business.

Dec. 13 – Annie & I went to church & we heard a sermon by Mr. McEachron and his text was 2nd.  Corinthians the 2 chapter & the 16 verse & H & Orrie came up awhile after dinner & the kid and it is a nice pleasant day clear & warm the roads are nice.  at night Annie & Eliza drove M & S over to the Union Meeting & Dave rode over with me we heard a sermon by Mr. McEachron.

Dec. 14 – I taught school up in Dist No 11 in Hebron & I drove my own horse & it is a nice pleasant day only rather cloudy warm & the roads are fine and at night I took a ride down Argyle way all for nothing to.

Dec. 15 – I taught school up in Dist No 11 in Hebron I drove my own horse & it snowed nearly all day or part of it & it hailed & turned to rain it snowed on in the morning & at night it rained on me bad day for my business.

Dec. 16 – I taught school over in Dist No 11 in Hebron & I drove my own horse & Annie rode down to H’s & Orries and at night I stoped & went to singing school and finally stayed all night and it is a pretty rough day thawed & made a lot of mud & then at night it frooze pretty hard.

Dec. 17 -  I taught school up in Dist No 11 in Hebron & I drove my own horse and at night I stopped at H’s and got my supper & feed my horse & then went up & got Annie at Mart Rogers & we went over to the Young peoples meeting & then came home & it is a very cool day & rough too.

Dec. 18 – I taught school up in Dist No 11 in Hebron and I drove my own horse and at night after I came home Annie & I went over to the sociable at the church & it is a nice pleasant day some warmer the roads are getting pretty good.

Dec. 19 – In the morning I drove around & then Annie & I went out to Fort Edward I stoped at Argyle & paid the taxes $43.83 they are a little higher than they was last year & at night I took a short ride and it is a nice warm day rather cloudy but not stormy.

Dec. 20 – We went to church and we heard a sermon by Mr. McEachron and it is a nice pleasant day warm & thawed a little and the roads are pretty good and at night Dave & I went down to Argyle to prayermeeting at the U. P. church and he drove down.

Dec. 21 – I taught school up in Dist No 11 in Hebron & I drove my horse and it is very good going now and Dave took a load of potatoes down to Salem the last load from the barn cellar.  & it is a nice pleasant day warm & pleasant some muddy again.

Dec. 22 – I taught school up in Dist No 11 in Hebron & I drove my horse and Annie went down & stayed at Orries till I came home and it is a nice warm day some cloudy & thawed some nice going now white frost in the morning.

Dec. 23 – I taught school up in Dist No 11 in Hebron and I drove my horse & Annie went down to John Pattersons with me & at night it rained so that I stayed all night with Everett W. & Annie went down to Orries & stayed at night Mr. McGiles folks came over to Everetts & we had a good time & it rained nearly all day warm rain the frost is all out I guess.

Dec. 24 - I taught school up in Dist No 11 in Hebron & I went home Everett & Fred Patterson took Annie home and it is a nice warm day only very cloudy & turned muddy & it rained at night and at night Annie & I went over to Etta * to her wedding and it rained & was terrible going & H & Orrie went too.

Dec. 25 -  I chored around in the morning & then I went down to H’s a visiting & stayed till after night and it is a nice warm day only cloudy & very muddy and Annie had company part of the day I guess.  It is a green Christmas in earnest no signs of snow.

Dec. 26 – I chored around all day and I cut Billy Liddles hair and he was up around here all day & it rained nearly all day & pretty hard part of the day and the wind blew hard too.  at night it cleared off & got colder.

Dec. 27 – Annie & I went to church and we heard a sermon by Mr. McEachron & his text was Romans the 8 chapter & the 28 verse and it is terrible going it is frooze but not quite hard enough to hold up so it is terribly going .  At night Davie & I went down to Argyle to Prayer meeting at U.P. Church or Young People’s Christian Endeavor.

Dec. 28 - I taught school up in Dist No 11 in Hebron & I drove my horse and in the morning I stopped at West Hebron & got a shoe put on and it is terrible rough going and it is a pretty cool day frooze pretty hard last night.

Dec. 29 -  I taught school up in Dist No 11 in Hebron & I drove my horse and it is some warmer but it is rough going it is thawing terrible south wind I guess it will all thaw out again & H & Orrie came up a visiting & stayed till after night awhile.

Dec. 30 – I taught school up in Dist No 11 in Hebron and I drove my horse and Annie went down to H’s & stayed all day at night I stopped at H’s and got my supper & went to singing school and then we came home & it is a cool, windy day at night it got  quite cold & frooze.

Dec. 31 – I taught school up in Dist No 11 in Hebron & I drove my own horse and it is a very rough & cool day the going is terrible rough & Dave drew up some cord wood.  & we have come to the close of a nother year all well at present & enjoying good health.

JANUARY:

10 - Saturday – we drawed ice from Mud lake 9 loads.

 

APRIL:

 2 – Davie commenced plowing

 3 – we had about 20 inches of snow a big snow storm a number had plowed

21 – We finished sowing Oats 14 Acres

 9 – Thurs.  I commenced painting the buildings I begun on the House

 

MAY:

15  Fri.  The Boys finished planting corn all done

 

JULY:

 9 – Thurs. Dave finished Hilling Potatoes 20 Acres

 8 – Wed.  My new Wagon came to Salem & I brought it home price $62.50 cash

10 – Fri.  The boys finished Hoeing corn all done Hoeing now

 

AUGUST:

13 Davie finished Haying & Harvesting also all done

24 & 28 Davie had his Oats threshed 460 bu. machine measure they would hold out over

             500 bu weight  We had 104 bu. of Rye

 

SEPTEMBER:

 7 – Mon. I commenced teaching school in Dist No 11 in Hebron

 8 – I had my watch cleaned at Fort Edward price $1.

15 – Dave got some cider made

16 – Dave commenced to dig potatoes the first

19 – Sat.  Dave begun cutting corn

 

OCTOBER:

31  Saturday  Davie bought a buck at Harvey Reynolds & turned him in with the sheep 92
