Sat. Jan. 1: “A Happy New Year. I
husked corn now & then through the day and in the afternoon Roscoe took a
grist down to West Hebron & got it back and it is fine sleighing and at
night Roscoe went away and it is a cloudy day and it snowed some but cleared
off."
Sun. Jan. 2: “It snowed about 4
inches last night and turned to rain or sleet in the morning it is a nasty
& stormy day We did'nt go to church so all stayed at home and kept house
and done the chores at night Roscoe took Marion down to West Hebron to Marys to
go to school.”
Mon. Jan. 3: “In the morning I
measured up what rye we had and Roscoe took the load of rye down to East
Greenwich 81 2/3 bu @ 95¢ per bu &
he drove both teams on 1 load & he got back at night and I husked
some corn & got ready to butcher to-morrow and it was snowy in the morning
and kept getting colder all day & very windy and quite cold at night.”
Tues. Jan. 4: ““In the morning I got
up early and chored around and we butchered to-day. Will McNeil, Edmund Pollock
& Frank Allen and myself killed the pigs 10 of them and when we got them
killed John Liddle & Harold brought over Billys old Boar & we cut him
& I am going to fatten him for ½ of him and we took the haries of from the
bull and it is a nice pleasant day only cold. Roscoe had to go down to Salem to
a law-suit & was gone nearly all day it is some warmer at night.”
Wed. Jan. 5: “In the morning we
loaded the pork 9 of them & Roscoe took them out to Glens Falls to O’Leary
1470 # @ 10¢ per # and it rained out there and he stayed all night at Hudson
Falls at his Aunt Jens and I husked corn part of the day & Mr. Hunt the light
man came up here from the County Farm and fixed the dynamo and started the
Engine and it is a nice day soft thawed quite a lot the snow is settling quite
a lot.”
Thur. Jan. 6: “I sorted the rest of
the apples 16 barrels and Ruby & Harry came over and stayed all day and
night too and Roscoe got home before noon and we chored around and in the
afternoon John Chamberlain & an insurance man came here and got Roscoe to
take out an Policy on his life and it is getting colder all day & windy
too.”
Fri. Jan. 7: “In the morning after
we done the chores Roscoe took the apples out to Glens Falls to the Red Line 16
barrels and I chored around cut up the pork & sausage meat and in the
afternoon Harry Smith took me up to Belcher on business and it is a nice
pleasant day only cold they stayed all night.”
Sat. Jan. 8: “I chored around and in
the forenoon Roscoe & Harry took the big sleighs done to West Hebron to get
some repairing done and was gone all day and I went down to Argyle to see Mr.
Conway and when I came back Dan Hurd was here & I sold him 500 bu of Giants
for $1 per bu to be delivered in March at Fort Edward and then I went down to
Cheese Factory Meeting and at night Arthur Glines called me up & I sold
him 200 bu more of Giants for the Even
Dollar to be delivered in March at Salem and it is a pleasant day but cold
& some cloudy & Ruby & Harry stayed all night. at night Roscoe went
away some place.”
Sun. Jan. 9: “We did'nt go to church
so we all stayed at home and kept house & stayed in the house it is to cold
to be out side and Ruby & Harry went home after dinner. and at night Roscoe
took Marion down to West Hebron to go to school and it is a pleasant day but
cold but not quite so cold at night.”
Mon. Jan. 10: “I snowed hard in the
morning but quit by noon and I chored around and Roscoe opened out the roads in
the afternoon and George McEachron brought some papers down here and at night
Roscoe & I went down to West Hebron to see Mary on business and it is not
very cold.”
Tues. Jan. 11: “I helped Georgia to
wash and we got done about 3 o’clock and then I went down to Argyle & seen
Conway and Roscoe went down to West Hebron & drawed ice for Lewis Mattison
and it is a nice day some cooler and the children have hard colds at night
Roscoe went down to West Hebron to an Oyster supper.”
Wed. Jan. 12: “The children are have
very bad colds and in the morning after I done the chores Roscoe & I went
down to West Hebron & got Mary up to Granville to see Mr. Parker a lawyer and we got home after
dark a little & it is a cloudy & cold day but some warmer at night
& rained & frooze as it came.”
Thur. Jan. 13: “In the morning it
had rained & was still raining & frooze as it came and there was an
offle coat of ice all most impossible to get around so slippery We chored around & the Insurance man
came around & left Roscoes policy & he paid the first premium $81.48
and John Chamberlain brought him & in the afternoon Roscoe went down to
West Hebron and I chored around & husked some corn in the barn and it
cleared off partly & got some colder & windy. The childrens colds are a
little better I guess Mary Elizabeth had the Croup all night but not bad and
the rest cough fierce & are fevered up.”
Fri. Jan. 14: “In the forenoon we
chored around and in the afternoon Roscoe drove down to West Hebron & got
Marion & she came home with a bad cold and nearly sick and the rest are all
nearly sick with colds but seem to feel pretty well It is getting colder all
day and at night Roscoe went down to West Hebron”
Sat. Jan. 15: “We did'nt do anything
but the chores & stay around the house the babe & busy are sick all day
and at night Roscoe went away & he sent the Doctor up from West Hebron and
they are quite sick the Doctor calls it
the Grip they both seem to have a bloody dysentary & are very week and it
is a cold day but moderating some & looks some like a storm.”
Sun. Jan. 16: “We did'nt go to
church any of us so all stayed at home & took care of the children the babe
is some better to-day but Mary Eliz is not much better she has a bad dysentary
yet. The Doctor was up to see them to-day and we heard that Aunt Sarah Chapman
was dead and it is a cloudy and cold day it looks some like a storm but cleared
off at night & got colder.
Mon. Jan. 17: “Cold & Mary E. is
no better Roscoe went down to West Hebron and got some Kerosene oil to put in
the oil stove to heat up the cellar and the doctor was up to Mary E. & she
has a bad Bloody dysentary and it is a cold raw winters day a man from East
Greenwich telephoned here to draw potatoes at $1 a bu. and I sorted some
potatoes & Roscoe sold 30 bu of Oats to Everett W. for 50¢ per bu. and
Roscoe put them in bags down to the other house and it is a cold day.”
Tues. Jan. 18: “I stayed at home all
day and Mary E. is no better she has a bloody dysentary yet & the Doctor
was up to see her and Roscoe took the Oats down to West Hebron to Everetts 37½
bu @ 50¢ and before night a little Harry & Ruby came over & stayed all
night Mary E. was glad to see Ruby too. I think she is a little better
to-night. and at night Roscoe went down to West Hebron & Harry drove down
to Argyle & got Jen she came out to Argyle it is a cold day about 9º above
zero all day.”
Wed. Jan. 19: “In the morning as
soon as we done the chores Harry took his team & took Ruby, Jen &
Mother up to Oscar Chapmans wifes funeral & Roscoe drove up alone & he
took his GranMother down to the yard at Salem and stayed down to West Hebron
when he came back & Marion & I stayed at home & took care of Mary
E. and she is some better to-day the bloody dysentary is checked and the Doctor
was up to-day and at night Harry & Ruby went down to West Hebron to a show
at the Hall and it is a nice pleasant day only cold for potatoes fine sleighing”
Thur. Jan. 20: “In the morning Will
McNeil came along & Roscoe & Harry took their teams and they all
started for Pawlet for slate and got as far as the Hebron church and it snowed
so hard that they turned around & came back and it snowed till noon &
it blowed terrible & drifted in places and at night Roscoe went down to West
Hebron to a show & Harry & Ruby stayed all night and the Doctor came to
see Mary E. but she is better. she feels pretty good up & around. I husked
some corn at night Roscoe & Marion brought Florence home with them.”
Fri. Jan. 21: “In the morning we
went down to the other house & put up a load of oats & Roscoe took them
down to Salem to Bert Robinson 118 ¾ bu at 50¢ per bu and he got back about
dark and it is nice sleighing and Ruby & Harry went home and I husked corn
nearly all day I am putting up a grist and at night Roscoe & Florence went
down to Argyle to a dance the Eastern Star a big crowd. it is a cloudy day
thawing some the snow is soft.”
Sat. Jan. 22: “In the morning we
measured up a load of oats and Roscoe took the load of oats down to Salem 121
bu at 50¢ per bu to Bert Robinson and it is
a nasty day it rained most of the day and the South wind blew and it
gutted the snow & sleighing Roscoe got home early and at night he took
Florence & Marion down to West Hebron to a show and it thawed a lot & I
husked corn nearly all day & I have got a grist husked”
Sun. Jan. 23: “We did'nt go to
church any of us to day so all stayed at home and kept house and it is a nice
pleasant day it thawed a little but got colder in the night the sleighing is
poor in places at night Roscoe took Florence & Marion down to West Hebron
to go to school to-morrow & he took a wagon the sleighing is poor. The
children are all pretty well again.”
Mon. Jan. 24: “In the morning after
we done the chores Roscoe took a big grist 11 barrels down to West Hebron &
got it ground and he took the cross cut saw down to get sharpened and I husked
corn in the big barn till he came home about 3 o’clock & then we took the
axes & saw & went up on top of the hill in the woods cross from or back
of the barn & cut down a white oak tree to make a wood rack & cut the
top into cord wood and it is a beautiful day pleasant & warm it thawed some
& Roscoe took the grist in a sleigh but it is poor sleighing.”
Tues. Jan. 25: “In the morning after
we done the chores Roscoe & I went up on top of the hill & cut logs
& the top of the trees into cord wood and we worked at the logs & wood
all day and it is a nice pleasant day warm and thawed a lot the snow banks
softened up to day in great shape and the roads are getting muddy where the ice
is off. it looks some like rain.”
Wed. Jan. 26: “In the forenoon
Roscoe & I after we done the chores went up in the woods on top of the hill
back of the barn & cut wood & some post timber & in the afternoon
we went over on the other place down along the gully & cut some pine trees
we let down 7 nice pines & did'nt get any sawed out we took down the team
and I was about in at night & was about sick and Roscoe went down to Salem
or West Hebron and the roads are getting muddy it is warm as spring.”
Thur. Jan. 27: “I was sick kind of a
Dysentary I was in the house all day & Roscoe & the little boys done
the chores and in the afternoon Roscoe went down to West Hebron & got our
Double Wagon and brought it home and it is a warm day thawing up fast hard
going too just like spring I am some better at night.”
Fri. Jan. 28: “I am some better to
day & up around but I stayed in the house all day and did'nt do much but
write a little and Roscoe chored around got out the good truck wagon &
drawed a load of manure over to the other place and at night he went down to
West Hebron & went to a party and Marion went too and came home from the
party and it is a cloudy & windy day the wind was in the West and got
cooler and frooze and was rough at night. the snow is nearly all gone.”
Sat. Jan. 29: “I am pretty well but
did'nt do much but the chores it was to cold to go to the woods and Roscoe
chored around and I wrote some and at night Roscoe & his Mother went down
to West Hebron & seen her mother and Marion & I kept the youngsters
& Billy came over and did'nt go home very early He paid me his Interest
& principal and it is rough going & cold it did'nt thaw much to-day.”
Sun. Jan. 30: “We did'nt go to
church to day so all stayed at home & kept house and it is a cloudy day and
looks some like a storm of some kind it is moderating some at night Roscoe took
Marion down to West Hebron to go to school and they went to prayer meeting I
think and it began raining about night.”
Mon. Jan. 31: “I husked corn part of
the day in the big barn and Roscoe is about sick with a cold and it is a cloudy
& dark day and some cooler but not cold and it is all thawing out again
very muddy.”
Tues. Feb. 1: “In the forenoon
Roscoe & I went down to Argyle I done some business at the Bank and done
some business with Conway and roscoe got his License card fixed to send to
Albany and in the afternoon I went with Roscoe down to West Hebron and seen
Mary about settling up the Estate & John C went too and it is a cloudy day
and got colder at night and Roscoe was about sick with a cold. it is fearful
muddy.”
Wed. Feb. 2: “Roscoe is about sick
with a cold and he was in the house all day and I chored around & wrote
some & it snowed all forenoon & some all day but did’nt amount to much
about 2 or 3 inches I guess and it is a cold day.”
Thur. Feb. 3: “Roscoe is no better
he is up and around the house part of the time he don’t go out any and I sorted
potatoes & husked a little corn not much it is most to cold and it is a
cold winters day very rough going now the ground is white again but no
sleighing.”
Fri. Feb. 4: “Roscoe is not much
better he is up & down but does not go out any yet. in the forenoon I
sorted some potatoes and in the afternoon I sorted some potatoes and in the
afternoon I went down to West Hebron & got Marion & Florence came home
with us and Ruby & Harry came over & the girls & them went down to
Argyle to a dance & came back here Roscoe wanted to go but he was not well
enough. It is a cold raw day but it is moderating I think.”
Sat. Feb. 5: “I chored around &
sorted potatoes and husked some corn in the barn cellar and Harry & Ruby
stayed all day & night too. Roscoe
is some better and in the afternoon he & Florence drove down to West Hebron
and it is a cloudy day & began snowing before night but did’nt amount to
much.”
Sun. Feb. 6: “Roscoe, Florence &
Marion & Hazel, Harold & I went to church and we heard a Sermon by Mr.
McEachron and he was about sick with a cold he went home at noon and Roscoe,
Florence & Marion came home at noon
the rest of us stayed & Mother stayed at home & kept the youngsters and
Ruby & Harry went home and it is a cloudy day & thawing and it snowed
some too. at night Roscoe took Florence & Marion down to West Hebron to go
to school.”
Mon. Feb. 7: “In the morning after I
done the chores Connars of East G. telephoned up here for potatoes & when
Roscoe got up he felt pretty well so we loaded up a load of potatoes &
Roscoe took the load down to East Greenwich 66 2/3 bu. @ $1.00 and he went in a
wagon it snowed some last night & turned to rain and got colder in the
morning the wind got in the West. it kept getting colder all day & a
fearful wind a bad day to be out. I helped Mother to Wash & it took nearly
all day. I husked what time I had down in the barn cellar and it was nearly
zero at night Roscoe got home a little after dark.”
Tues. Feb. 8: “In the forenoon
Roscoe helped me to cut down 2 apple trees with a cross cut saw & we sawed
up the butts & I cut some with a axe and in the afternoon Roscoe went down
to West Hebron & stayed till after night and I cut or trimmed up the apple
trees that we cut & I split them up and I husked a little corn and it is a
nice pleasant day cold but pleasant it thawed a little where the sun shone
fair. Mary E. & Marjory have colds again & croupy too.”
Wed. Feb. 9: “In the forenoon Roscoe
and I went over to the other house and sorted a load of potatoes for Roscoe and
in the afternoon We went up in the orchard and sawed down two old apple trees
and at night Roscoe went down to West Hebron and it is a pretty cloudy day.”
Thur. Feb. 10: “In the morning
Roscoe & I loaded up a load of potatoes over to the other place and Roscoe
took the load out to Glens Falls to Eddys 62 bu @ 1.10 per bu the load was
Roscoes load and I went down & trimmed up the pine tops into cord wood and
in the afternoon I went down to Argyle and seen Conway and it is a cold raw
& windy day. Roscoe got home after dark awhile.”
Fri. Feb. 11: “In the forenoon
Roscoe & I took the sleighs & went down on the other place and Roscoe brought
up a load of pine tops & I trimmed some more tops & when he came back
we sawed some logs & put some on skids and brought up a nother load of wood
and after dinner we went back & sawed some more logs & put them on
skids and brought up a nother load of limbs or pine tops. and it is a stormy
& nasty day & cold too.”
Sat. Feb. 12: “It is a cold &
stormy day Roscoe & I put what oats there was done to the other house and
we put up a load of potatoes down cellar of mine and I husked some corn and
chore time Roscoe got kicked in the stomach by Ned Horse and was hurt very bad
and his Mother & I got him in the house and we telephoned for 2 doctors
Stillman & Madison and they did’nt how bad he was hurt Edwin Gilchrist went
after Stillman & he took him home & went out to Fort Edward & got a
Nurse He was in pain but did’nt seem to be so bad as he was. Theodore & his
Wife came down & John McKernon & Edd Pollock. Edwin stayed all night
when he got back Ruby & Harry came
right over.”
Sun. Feb. 13: “Roscoe seemed to hold
his own till about noon and then he began to breathe short & fast & his
hands & feet got cold no or poor circulation he got offle bad about night
& kept getting worse till about 20 minutes past 11 o’clock he died our
darling boy Roscoe had to go. We tried to save him but could not it was the
Lords will to take him. The Doctor was up to see him after dinner awhile and we
telephoned for him in the night but he did’nn’t get here till after our Darling
boy Roscoe died Clayton Barkley stayed
all night with us. It is a cold windy day & stormy There was no preaching at our church the
Minister is about sick. This is the darkest day of all our lives we had to part
with our dear boy Roscoe We can’t see
how it had to be”
Mon. Feb. 14: “Our Darling boy Roscoe
died this morning about 20 minutes past 1 o’clock. It was a sad thing We were shocked as well as every body else.
Everett brought up Mary in the night just after he died Ross came up we picked
out a nice casket for him and we had a lot come to see Roscoe all day It was a sad day very cold the coldest yet
I guess but it is pleasant & clear. Mary was here Florence & Lydia and
others Eliza was helping Georgia.”
Tues. Feb. 15: “It is a nother sad
day but we had a lot of company nearly all day Ruby & Harry had to go over
home and they drove our big team they got back before night a little and Mr.
McEachron was up to day and it is a lonesome time I am about Crazy it is pretty
good sleighing now.”
Wed. Feb. 16: “It keeps getting
sader every day but Roscoe’s troubles are all over oh our Dear boy can’t be with us any more I wish we all could
be with him it is a hard thing to think he won’t be here anymore we could &
do cry our eyes out nearly. The funeral was at 1 o’clock and Rev. Mr. Hayford
preached the funeral sermon and Roscoes funeral was the largest funeral held at
the house that I ever saw. Our dear boy Roscoe had a world of friends He was covered with flowers they were nice
but he was nicer. Georgia & I drove Roscoes horse & cutter & Harry
drove his team on his 3 seated sleigh. and took Ruby, Florence, Marion, Lydia
& Mary. & the rest of the children did’nt go to the yard Mrs. Lant kept them and we got home about
chore time. Charley Barkley, Rob Sloane & Willie & Robert McFarland
helped to take care of the teams & John Weir drove a team to carry the
flowers.”
Thur. Feb. 17: “In the forenoon
Harry took a grist down to West Hebron and he only got back part of it &
got some groceries and he drove the big team and I chored around. My heart is
broke I can’t set myself at anything and Willie McFarland came down in the
morning and got the old team & drawed ice for Theodore we wanted to help
him so we could get a chunk of ice once in a while. and Everett came up &
got Lydia & Florence & Mary went down home with Harry and after dinner
Harry & I drawed up a load of hay from the lower barn to the big barn for
the calves and then we went up on the Hill back of the barn & snaked down
some logs down in the orchard back of the barn and it is a warm & cloudy day
it looks like rain.”
Fri. Feb. 18: “In the forenoon Harry
and I went up on top of the hill back of the barn & snaked down the rest of
the logs and brought down a load of cord wood and put the logs on skids in the
orchard back of the barn and in the afternoon it snowed & we did’nt do
much I husked a little corn over in
the big barn and it snowed right down and was wet as it came and it is a cloudy
lonesome day.”
Sat. Feb. 19: “In the forenoon we
took the platform of from Roscoes big sleighs & then went over in the
orchard back of the barn & loaded on the logs and Harry took the load (5
logs) down to the saw mill at West Hebron and in the afternoon we went over on
the other place and put on a load of pine logs and Harry took the load 9 logs
down to West Hebron and Ruby, Marion & Hazel drove Roscoes Horse &
cutter down to West Hebron and I chored around & husked some corn and it is
a cold raw day good sleighing again. It is lonely without Roscoe around.”
Sun. Feb. 20: “Harry, Ruby &
Mary E. went over home to Adamsville & he drove his team & Roscoes
cutter & my harness and We did’nt go to church so all stayed at home &
kept house and it is a lonesome day with our dear boy Roscoe It is a cold day and cloudy too They got
home after dark awhile.”
Mon. Feb. 21: “In the forenoon we
went down on the other place along the gutter with the old team & sawed the
pine logs & put them on the skids part of them and brought up a load of
wood and in the afternoon Harry took a load of pine logs down to the mill at
West Hebron I chored around it is a fearful cold day but was clear &
pleasant fine sleighing again.”
Tues. Feb. 22: “In the morning we
took both teams down on the other place & sawed the rest of the logs &
put them on the skids and Harry took a load of logs down to West Hebron to the
mill and Harold & James & I put on a load of wood and brought it up to
the house and in the afternoon we took both teams down & Harry took a load
of pine logs down to the mill at West Hebron that is all of them that is cut
and Harold & I sawed & split up some tops and we brought the load of
wood up to the house and it is a nice pleasant day warmer & thawed some
to-day.”
Wed. Feb. 23: “In the morning we
loaded up a load of potatoes and Harry started for Glens Falls and got as far
as Argyle & it snowed so hard he left the load or potatoes in Plumbs pool
room and came back home and it quit snowing about noon & after dinner Harry
took the big team over to his place at Adamsville and he is going to put up his
ice & get some saw dust to-morrow and it began snowing about 9 o’clock
& snowed till noon right down but it quit & was a nice afternoon. I
chored around and husked some corn in the barn cellar and it got colder at
night.”
Thur. Feb. 24: “I chored around
husked some corn down in the barn cellar and I finished the corn that was in
the cellar and I sorted some more potatoes that was in the cellar enough for a
nother load and Harry was over home drawing ice & sawdust and he got back
at night but not very early and it is a beautiful day thawed quite a lot where
the sun shone.”
Fri. Feb. 25: “In the morning it was
rainy but after we done the chores it looked as thought it was going to clear
off so I loaded up a load of potatoes & Harry took his team & went down
to Argyle & got the load that was in Plumbs pool room and we took both
loads out to Glens Falls 1 load to Buckley & Sheean & one load to
Metzner 16 bu. @ 1.10 per bu & it was good sleighing going out but rained
nearly all day on us every thing was wet a bad day for team & Man to be out
we got home about 8 o’clock and sleighing was getting poor in places coming
home the childrens colds are not much
better Marjory has an awful time
coughing she coughs nearly all the
time.”
Sat. Feb. 26: “In the morning the
rain had turned to snow it had snowed about 2 inches and it snowed nearly all
day and in the forenoon Harry & I husked some corn enough to make out a
grist and in the afternoon Harry took a grist down to West Hebron and got it
ground & brought it home 10 barrels and I sorted some Giants and it snowed
some all day it helped the sleighing in good shape if it freezes hard enough
to-night & it is getting colder.”
Sun. Feb. 27: “We did’nt go to
church any of us so all stayed at home and kept house and before night a little
Ruby & Harry took Marion down to her Grandmothers at West Hebron to go to
school and they drove Roscoes Horse & rig or cutter and it is a cold raw
day sleighing is pretty good again & getting colder.”
Mon. Feb. 28: “In the morning after
we did the chores we got ready and went with both teams up to West Pawlet &
got 2 loads of Slate for will McNeil 9
square and we had a good day only cold & windy we got home about sun down
& let the 2 load set here all night & the childrens colds are no
better cough. cough all the time
nearly.”
Tues. Feb. 29: “In the morning after
we done the chores we took the 2 loads of slate over to Will McNeils & when
we came back we went up on top of the hill back of the barn & cut or sawed
up the maple tree that Roscoe & I left & brought down 2 loads of cord
wood and in the afternoon We drawed down wood to the house & split the
Maple logs and it is a nice pleasant day only cold good sleighing now.”
Wed. Mar. 1: “In the morning after
we done the chores Harry took his team over home & Ruby drove prince over
to Adamsville & he got away or thrower her out & she got hurt some and
Harry had to bring her home at night. In the forenoon I drawed the rest of the
wood off from the Hill 2 loads & Harold & James was with me we got 1
load of apple tree wood from the orchard and in the afternoon I went down to
West Hebron with Mr. John Conway on business. & I made a trade with Harry
for a year on the place I give him $300 to Mar 1, 1917 or 10 months if we get
our work done and it is a beautiful day clear & thawed a very little it is cold nights.”
Thur. Mar. 2: “In the morning Mother
telephoned to the Doctor & he came up to Ruby she was in bed all day In the
forenoon we went up to Belcher to Marys place & got Roscoes Sulky plow
& some other things and when we came back after dinner we went up in the
orchard & cut some apple tree wood or cross cut some and it is getting some
colder at night but got soft in the afternoon. The Doctor says all of the
children have the Whooping cough.”
Fri. Mar. 3: “In the morning after
we done the chores I took Harry over home at Adamsville & I drove Roscoes

potatoes and Georgia drove Roscoes Horse & cutter down to West Hebron after
Marion and it is a pleasant but cold day fine sleighing. the children are
coughing nearly all the time.”
Sat. Mar. 4: “In the forenoon I
chored around and went up in the orchard & cut up some apple tree wood
& split some and in the afternoon the boys & I drawed down to the house
what we had cut & husked some corn and I sorted some potatoes and it is a
nice day only cold good winter weather & fine sleighing at night Harry came
over. the children are about the same they all have the Whooping cough now.”
Sun. Mar. 5: “ We did’nt go to
church so we all stayed at home & kept house and kept the youngsters They
all have the Whooping cough & Marjory & the babe are the worst they
cough something fierce in fact they all cough very bad. at night or before a
little Marion went down to West Hebron with Roy Randles and it is getting
colder again.”
Mon. Mar. 6: “In the forenoon Harry
went over home and I chored around sorted some potatoes and husked a little but
it is to cold to husk and it is fine sleighing and stiff winter weather and the
children are no better cough fierce
Marjory is the worst. I cut up the rest of the apple tree wood &
drawed it down to the house.”
Tues. Mar. 7: “In the forenoon I
sorted some potatoes & chored around & in the afternoon I husked some
corn & chored around & Ruby went over to Adamsville and it is a cold
day and it snowed some last night & turned to rain & made a sharp crust
3 or 4 inches and it is a cloudy day & looks like rain & did rain &
snow.”
Wed. Mar. 8: “In the morning Harry
& Ruby came over & Frank Allen came over & we loaded the old Hog
& took him over to Billys & butchered him and Billy butchered 5 pigs we
brought home ½ of the old hog and it is a cloudy day & snowed a lot 6
inches I guess or more. it looks more like mid winter than spring lots of snow Lydia, Lillian & Mary Beveridge came
up awhile and John Chamberlain brought the Insurance man over here and he paid
us Roscoes Insurance $2000.
Thur. Mar. 9: “In the morning Harry
took the big team & broke out the roads with the big sleighs and then we
husked corn enough to get a grist and in the afternoon Harry took a grist down
to West Hebron & got the horses shawd and and I sorted some potatoes and
chored around. He took the sausage down to get ground & I cut up the Half
of the old hog and it is getting colder.”
Fri. Mar. 10: “In the forenoon it
snowed & blowed but cleared of before noon & Harry broke out the roads
again and in the afternoon he & Ruby went down to West Hebron after Marion
& he took his team & got them shawd and I husked some corn & sorted
a few potatoes and chored around and it is winter weather in earnest cold &
a pile of snow for the time of year. Ruby stayed down at Everetts & at
night Harry went down after her.”
Sat. Mar. 11: “In the morning soon
as we done the chores We took both teams and went down to the Saw Mill at West
Hebron we took the White oak up to Lewis Mattisons shop to make a wood rack
& I let him have the balance of it and then we brought home the balance of
the Lumber. Pine & Bass Wood. 2 big loads. we doubled up the hills and
after dinner Harry & Ruby went out to Fort Edward & drove Prince &
Millie & put them in the stable & went on up to Glens Falls on business
and I onloaded both loads of Lumber & fixed a place to pile it and sorted it
and it is a nice pleasant day but cold as winter it did’nt thaw but a very
little fine sleighing only it is not
beat out very good the snow is mealy. it is so cold.”
Sun. Mar. 12: “We did’nt go to
church so all stayed at home and kept the youngsters the Whooping cough is
still with us the children are getting along well as could be expected they all
cough & Whoop something fierce. at night Harry drove his team down to West
Hebron & took Marion down to Marys to go to school and it is a cold day
Winter weather.”
Mon. Mar. 13: “In the morning after
we done the chores we loaded up a load of potatoes Giants and Harry took the
load down to Salem on Roscoes big sleigh 70 bu @ $1. per bu & I sorted
potatoes nearly all day and after he got home we put up some potatoes in bags
and it is a nice day lots of snow & good sleighing it thawed some in the
shade the children are no better. they cough & Whoop something terrible.”
Tues. Mar. 14: “In the morning after
we done the chores we loaded up 2 loads of potatoes & Harry took his team
and I had on 75 bu that is all I sold to Glines at Salem and we got home before
night a little it was cloudy & warmer but got colder at night & began
snowing and the children are no better they cough & Whoop terrible fine
sleighing all the way to Salem & lots of snow.”
Wed. Mar. 15: “It is a blizzard in
earnest snowed & blowed all day & was zero in places all day it was
about 7º above zero all day here. traffic is stopped entirely roads are full of
snow We sorted potatoes when we was’nt doing the chores and it is rank for the
time of year. the children are about the same all coughing & Whooping
terrible. just as cold as ever.”
Thur. Mar. 16: “In the morning after
we done the chores we went at shoveling & plowing out the snow out of the
roads & it took us about all day & we got wet too at night it got
colder and frooze our cloths on us and it is a pleasant day we worked on the
road about 7 hours and the children are about he same no better.”
Fri. Mar. 17: “We sorted potatoes
what time we had and it is a windy day the snow is blowing a terrible gale
& is drifting again and before night Harry drove his team down to West
Hebron & got Marion & done some trading and it is cold as ever &
windy too. the children are about the same Muley cow had a calf.”
Sat. Mar. 18: “In the morning after
we done the chores we took the old team and opened out the roads we got them
opened out by noon and then we sorted potatoes and after we had dinner Harry
& Ruby went over to Adamsville and stayed all night and I finished sorting
the giants that was over here and done the chores Flora Temple cow had a calf
and it is winter weather in earnest. cold & a pile of snow the roads are
open again. the children are about the same.”
Sun. Mar. 19: “We did’nt go to
church any of us and after dinner I took Marion down to West Hebron to Marys to
go to school and we drove prince & Millie & went up by Belcher and seen
Dan Hurd about the potatoes and the snow is deep & hard traveling for
horses now and it is a pleasant day & thawed a little and at night Harry
& Ruby came over and it is cold at night.”
Mon. Mar. 20: “In the morning we
took both teams and went over to Adamsville and got their things or mooving
& brought back the piano and we got back before night a little and it is a
nice day but cold winter weather it did’nt thaw but a very little in the Sun
and it is cold at night the roads are drifted fierce most every where there is
a lot of snow on the ground for the time of year.”
Tues. Mar. 21: “In the forenoon we
went over to the other house & sorted Giants Roscoes & the childrens
and in the afternoon we husked some corn in the cow stable & barn too. and
Harry clipped his other horse and it thawed & packed some to day we got word to day to go at drawing
potatoes Giants to-morrow and it is fine sleighing.”
Wed. Mar. 22: “In the morning we
done the chores and then loaded up both loads of potatoes and we took them out
to Fort Edward and it stormed nearly all day & blowed a gale & drifted
we got home before night a little and it is a terrible day cold & windy too
and it is drifting again on our way the track is nearly full.”
Thur. Mar. 23: “In the morning after
we done the chores we went at breaking out the roads plowing & shoveling
and we got them cleaned out by noon and in the afternoon We husked corn awhile
in the barn and in the cow stable and it is a pleasant day but cold air. the
roads were drifted full nearly every where.”
Fri. Mar. 24: “In the morning after
we done the chores Will McNeil came over to take a load potatoes & we
loaded up 3 load of potatoes Giants & took them out to Fort Edward 76 bu.
63 bu. 50 1/3 bu in all at $1 per bu to Dan Hurd and the roads are hard
traveling so much snow it was mealy & not beat out Harry got hung up and we
got home about dark it take a long time to onload and it is a cold raw wind but
pleasant where the sun shone & wind did’nt blow.”
Sat. Mar. 25: “In the morning after
we done the chores we loaded up 2 loads of potatoes and we took them out to
Fort Edward 80½ bu & 58½ bu Giants @ $1 to Dan Hurd and it is a nice
pleasant day warmer & thawed a lot to-day we got home about dark and Ruby
& Marion had the chores all done and the sleighing is good yet but around
the villages it is nearly bare around there & the railroad tracks &
very sloppy and it is a nice pleasant day but cool air cold in the morning.”
Sun. Mar. 26: “We did’nt go to
church so we all stayed at home and kept the children the Whooping cough is a
little better I guess but coughing fierce and Hazel is about sick and We did’nt
take Marion down to West Hebron and it is a nice pleasant day warmer and the
snow melted fast to-day.”
Mon. Mar. 27: “In the morning I got
up early and done the chores & then we loaded up a load of potatoes and I
took the load out to Fort Edward 5 bu @ $1 per bu Giants to Dan Hurd this makes
505 bu I have drawed to him & Harry took his team and went over home &
went at drawing his potatoes and when I got home Marion went over to the other
place with me & we put up a load of their potatoes ‘Giants’ in bags and
then done the chores and it is a beautiful day it thawed a lot the sleighing is
getting thin in places.”
Tues. Mar. 28: “In the morning I got
up early and done the chores & Ruby went over to the other place with me
and helped me to load up a load of Giants for the children and I took the load
down to Salem 52 1/6 bu at 1.15 per bu and when I got home Ruby went over to
the other place and helped me to put a load of Roscoes potatoes Giants in bags
and then I done the chores. & the Jersey cow had a calf and Harry came back
after night a little he took a nother load of his potatoes to Smiths Basin and
it was very good sleighing going down but it thawed & waisted fast to-day
poor in places coming home.”
Wed. Mar. 29: “In the morning I got
up early and done the chores & we went over to the other place & loaded
up a load of potatoes Giants Roscoes & I took the load down to Salem 52 bu
nearly and I got 1.15 per bu. and the sleighing is about played out I brought
home the new wood rack & in the forenoon Harry husked corn and in the afternoon
he took a grist down to West Hebron and he had to leave the most of it and it
is a pleasant day & warm the water is started good now.”
Thur. Mar. 30: “In the forenoon we
drawed the children’s & Roscoes potatoes over to the House cellar from the
other house and we took the sleighs but it was poor sleighing and in the
afternoon we got the Truck wagon & drove up the road & broke the road
open for wagons and then we went over on the other place and cut up a chestnut
tree & brought over part of it to the house and it is a nice day warm &
thawed a lot too water is high. The
roads are getting muddy in places.”
Fri. Mar. 31: “In the morning we
chored around and John Liddle & Frank Allen came over & sawed our wood
they called it 8 cord @ 50¢ and we got done before night a little and at night
Harry rode one of his Horses over home & came back and it is a nice
pleasant day & warm snow is going fast and water is getting Higher and the
children are getting a little better with the Whooping cough.”
Sat. Apr. 1: “Harry & I husked
corn nearly all forenoon and we put away the sleighs and chored around and then
I drove up to Belcher & then drove down to West Hebron & I drove
Roscoes Horse & Mollie and it is very hard going the frost is going out It
was dark when I got back & it is a warm day water is high now. not much ice
in the roads.”
Sun. Apr. 2: “We stayed at home all
day and it is a nice pleasant day warm snow is going fast mostly bank left now
and the children are getting along pretty well now Harry rode a Horse back on
one of his Horses some place away.”
Mon. Apr. 3: “In the morning Harry
took a grist down to West Hebron & left it and brought home one that was
down there & Marion rode down with him to school and I chored around fixed
a place to boil sap & fixed a place to boil sap and in the afternoon we
took the wagon & Hay rack & drew the cutters & small sleighs over
to the other place & put them in the Hog House and split some wood at the
door & cut some limbs and it is a nice day good sap day we got about 2 gal
of syrup boiled. very muddy going Harold, Hazel & Marjory went to school
but the cough & Whoop yet.”
Tues. Apr. 4: “It is a nasty &
stormy day snowed a little only all day but thawed as it came & we husked
corn nearly all day & clipped the Horses legs and it is a nasty day muddy
& nasty. cool air. the children are getting along pretty well now”
Wed. Apr. 5: “In the morning Harry
went down to West Hebron & got Earl Thompson the carpenter to put in the
doors up in the Horse barn & I helped him and Harry took the team &
went over beyond Adamsville & got 50 bu of seed oats @ 55¢ per bu. and it
is hard going but a nice pleasant day at night Earl went home and Harry &
Ruby went down to West Hebron to a show.”
Thur. Apr. 6: “In the morning Earl
came up & finished the doors and Harry & I cut the limbs & split
wood at the door and it is a nice day good sap day and the roads are fierce.
the children got school now and are about well now.”
Fri. Apr. 7: “In the morning the
ground was white & after we done the chores Harry took a grist down to West
Hebron & left it & brought home another one that was down there &
got the team shawd and I sorted potatoes and in the afternoon We spilt some
posts for fence & then split wood at the door and it is a windy day sap run
some and in the afternoon Ruby went down after Marion & took Hazel down
& left her at Marys. & Lydia came home with the girls.”
Sat. Apr. 8: “In the forenoon we
drawed the posts up along the orchard where we are going to make fence and then
we split wood at the door & we finished it and in the afternoon Harry
clipped the big team and I helped & the girls did too & Mother & I
went down to the Cemetery & then came home and the roads are fierce and at
night it began snowing it is a cloudy day & cooler.”
Sun. Apr. 9: “It snowed till about 3
o’clock and melted as it came in places wind is in the north it is a young
blizzard and the roads must be fierce. before night a little Harry took Marion
& Lydia down to West Hebron It is pretty soft going now.”
Mon. Apr. 10: “In the forenoon we
husked corn we finished up in the big barn and in the afternoon We clipped the
rest of our horses Roscoes pony & Mollie & old Grey and the babe is not
feeling very well to-day and after supper he had a fit or a spasm we tried to
get a doctor but did’nt get one and he seemed some better but we was up with
him all night.”
Tues. Apr. 11: “In the morning Harry
took his team & our big wagon over to his place in Adamsville to draw his
potatoes & hay. & in the forenoon I chored around cut some wood to boil
sap and sorted some potatoes and in the afternoon I chored around went up on
the hill where we cut wood & carried the brush off. and sorted some
potatoes and it is a nice pleasant day the roads are begaining to dry up some
and the babe is about the same he is pevish. & fevered up by times.”
Wed. Apr. 12: “In the forenoon I
mixed up our grass seed and sowed the seed on our rye the big hill and in the
afternoon I hitched up the big team & took a grist down to West Hebron
& left it 11 barrels & brought home that was down there & Harold
& James went down with me and we did’nt start very early so was late in
getting home. the roads are drying up fast in places.”
Thur. Apr. 13: “In the forenoon we
went over to the other place & drawed some brush & some apple tree wood
up to the house and then James & John C & I went up back & fixed
the fence around the cow & old pasture and in the afternoon Ruby took
Mollie & Prince down to West Hebron & got them shawd and brought home
Mary with her and I chored around & sorted potatoes & it is a nice day
but looks some like a storm.”
Fri. Apr. 14: “In the forenoon it
rained a little and about noon it came on for good & did so the rest of the
day and it turned to snow I sorted potatoes most of the day & in the afternoon
I took Mary down home at West Hebron & brought home Marion & Florence
and it is a cold rain & snows part of the time it is a backward Spring no
mistake and a very lonesome time for us with Roscoe “
Sat. Apr. 15: “In the morning the
ground was covered with snow & in the forenoon I finished sorting the
potatoes and then the boys and I took the team & took the tools & some
boards & went over back and fixed some gates and hung them up and in the
afternoon we went over to the other place and fixed some fence and then we
hitched up the big team and went down to West Hebron & got a grist and
Marion & Florence drove Mollie & Prince down to Argyle in the Cemetery
and Roscoes grave was fixed up & the dirt all removed and at night Harry came
home and it is a nice pleasant day the roads are drying up some but the Mud
holes are no better.”
Sun. Apr. 16: “We stayed at home all
day and it is very lonesome with Roscoe it is a very backward time snow banks
are around yet but are going pretty fast the ground keeps cold & wet too.
About night Clarence Lant came over and borrowed $10 of me for awhile.”
Mon. Apr. 17: “In the forenoon we
sat posts & drove posts up along the orchard & the field above the
house and we got the posts all sat and wire strung along and in the afternoon
we got out the plows to begin plowing but it came on rain so we went at husking
corn in the hay barn & it quit after awhile and we stretched the wire fence
up along the orchard & finished it and it is a dark cloudy day but did’nt
rain much. In the morning Ruby took Marion & Florence down to school at
West Hebron & got Nell shawd she
drove Nell & Prince.”
Tues. Apr. 18: “We began plowing we
plowed all day down in the lower fallow and it was plenty wet too and it is a
cloudy day & windy & cool too. and it rained a little quite cool at
night.”
Wed. Apr. 19: “We plowed with both
teams all day in the morning we plowed the rest of the lower fallow & began
plowing in the upper fallow on top of the hill and we had to plow through a
snow bank & Frost was in the ground so we had to skip a place and it is a
cool & windy day the roads have dried
up to day more than any day. In the afternoon Ruby drove down to West
Hebron & got one of Harrys horses shawd.”
Thur. Apr. 20: “In the forenoon We
both plowed up on top of the hill in the upper fallow and in the afternoon
Harry went over to Will McNeils & helped him to raise his barn and I
dragged over the lower fallow with the smoothing Harrow and then I plowed up in
the other field awhile and it is a nice pleasant day some cloudy at night Harry
& Ruby went down to West Hebron to a show & brought home Marion with
them from school.”
Fri. Apr. 21: “In the morning I
sowed the lower fallow to oats & then I finished plowing up in the upper
fallow & then I dragged till noon up in the upper fallow & Harry
dragged the oats in with the smoothing Harrow and in the afternoon I sowed the
upper fallow with oats and Harry dragged it over & then dragged the oats in
and it is a nice day Ruby & Marion drove Ben down & got a shoe put on
and at night I loaded up a load of potatoes & Marion helped me and Harry,
Ruby & Hazel went down to West Hebron to a show and it is a nice pleasant
day.”
Sat. Apr. 22: “In the morning Harold
& I took a load of potatoes out to Glens Falls 47½ bu @ 1.10 to Frank
Sheehan and it rained a lot a very bad day and Harry took his team & took a
load of his potatoes out to Glens Falls and we got home about chore time and it
is a cold rain the girls done the chores or the most of them.”
Sun. Apr. 23: “We did’nt go to
church so all stayed at home and kept house and it is a lonesome day cloudy and
rained a little most all day a very cloudy Hazy Day but grass looks green Rye
is fine now.”
Mon. Apr. 24: “In the forenoon we
husked corn and chored around and in the afternoon we plowed with both teams up
on the big side hill and at night we loaded up a load of potatoes and it is a
cloudy day and it is wet plowing too.”
Tues. Apr. 25: “In the morning I
took a load of potatoes out to Glens Falls to Yaffee 50 bu @ 1.15 per bu &
James went with me & we got home about sun down & Harry went over home
& took a load of his potatoes out to Glens Falls & it is a nice drying
day but fierce going out it drawed wicked”
Wed. Apr. 26: “In the forenoon Harry
plowed with his team up on the big side hill and I sowed the grass seed on the
lower fallow & rolled it in and in the afternoon he plowed in the same
field with his team and I sowed the grass seed on the upper fallow & rolled
most of it in and it is a nice pleasant day some warmer. Mother, Marion &
Mary E. drove prince down to West Hebron. Mr. Hunt the Light man came up and
went to Work again.”
Thur. Apr. 27: “In the morning I
finished rolling the grass seed & oats in on the upper fallow and then I
went up on the big Side hill & we both plowed all day about we quit early
& went down & burnt the pine brush on the Kinney place and it looks
like rain at night but a nice day.”
Fri. Apr. 28: “In the forenoon we
both plowed up on the big side hill and we got done and Harry went up & borrowed
Theodores Double Wagon to take a load of potatoes out to-morrow and in the
afternoon we went over on the other place and began plowing the field cross the
creek. He plowed with his team and at night we loaded up both loads of potatoes
and in the afternoon Mother, Ruby & the babe went down to Argyle they drove
prince and Mr. Hunt went home and it is a nice day some warmer.”
Sat. Apr. 29: “In the morning we
both took a load of potatoes out to Glens Falls Harry drove his team & took
his load to Frank Sheehan & I took my load to Metzner 46 & 54 bu @ 1.10
& 1.12½ per bu and we got home about night and Mother & James drove
prince down to West Hebron & she took Mary down to Salem Cemetery and Lydia
came home with them and it is a nice day some warmer.”
Sun. Apr. 30: “Harry & Ruby
drove Prince out to Fort Edward and went up to Hudson Falls and Marion &
Hazel took Lydia down home at West Hebron & went to the Methodist church
and drove Mollie & Everett & Maggie came up awhile and it is a nice
pleasant day warm & grass is growing now.”
Mon. May 1: “We both plowed all day
over on the other place across the creek and got most done & it is a nice
pleasant day warm and the little flies bothered the horses fierce and at night
Harry & Ruby went down to West Hebron & got a horse shawd and Marion
drove prince to school. she drives this week. Harry used his team in the
forenoon.”
Tues. May 2: “In the forenoon I
dragged the big side hill over with the smoothing Harrow and Harry finished
flowing the field over across the creek on the other place & began plowing
the old orchard and in the afternoon I sowed the oats on the big side hill
& Harry dragged them in with the smoothing Harrow and he used his team in
the forenoon. and it is a drying day clear & windy. Mr. Hunt & a nother
man came & took the light plant out of the cellar.”
Wed. May 3: “In the forenoon I
rolled in the oats up on the big side hill with the old team & I got done
& Harry dragged the field across the creek over on the other place &
then plowed in the old orchard till noon and he used his team & in the
afternoon it rained but not very hard & we both husked corn in the Hay barn
& it is a warm day the rain makes the grass look nice & green.”
Thur. May 4: “In the forenoon I
sowed the oats on the field across the creek on the other place and I sowed the
grass seed too & Harry dragged in the oats with the smoothing Harrow and
then plowed in the old orchard till noon and in the afternoon I rolled the oats
over in the same field & he plowed over there in the old orchard and at
night we loaded up a load of potatoes and it rained some last night and it
sooned dried up at night Frank Day came down & I sold him my calves at 8¢
to be delivered at Belcher next monday morning.”
Fri. May 5: “In the morning I took
the last load of potatoes out to Hudson Falls 64 bu @ 1.15 to Hunt. &
Calfoys and I got home about chore time and I had a lot of errands to do and
Harry plowed over on the other place & he plowed the old orchard & he
got done & plowed the garden over there and it is a nice day. at night
Harry & Ruby went over home & got his wagon.”
Sat. May 6: “We both plowed up on
top of the hill above the house for corn with both teams. He plowed in the
afternoon with his team and Harold & James took a grist down to West Hebron
& got it ground & brought it back home and it is a nice pleasant day”
Sun. May 7: “In the forenoon a man
brought the car out from Hudson Falls & he & Harry went for a ride he
gave Harry a lesson and when they came back we all took a ride down to the Cemetery
& visited Roscoes grave and when we came back Harry & Ruby took Frank
the man back home to Hudson Falls & then they brought the car home and we
had a heavy thunder shower about 3 o’clock and the grass looks fine.”
Mon. May 8: “In the morning we loaded
5 calves & James & Harold & I took the calves up to Frank Days at
Belcher at 8¢ per # and when we came back I went on the other place &
dragged the old orchard over for corn with the smoothing Harrow and Harry
plowed all day up on top of the hill in the meadow and in the afternoon I
plowed in the meadow up on top of the hill and it is a fine pleasant day.”
Tues. May 9: “In the forenoon we
drew over a load of hay for the horses and got the truck wagons ready to draw
manure & we each take a load of manure over to the other place on the Hill
south of the orchard & we plowed over back in the field on top of the hill
all day sod and it is pretty hard plowing I mean the sod & cold grass it is
moist enough & plows up in nice shape. and it is a nice day. In the morning
Marion went down & got Mrs. Bussing.”
Wed. May 10: “We both plowed all day
over on the other place in the field on top of the hill the back part we plowed
with side hill plows & the light men came & brought back the plant and
it is a nice day good weather to plow we take over a load of manure every time
we go over & put it on the hill south of the orchard. at night Mother took
Mrs. Bussing down home.”
Thur. May 11: “He used his team. In
the forenoon Harry plowed up in the meadow on top of the hill & he got it
done and I marked out the old orchard on the other place both ways for corn and
in the afternoon we both planted corn over there & we finished it and it is
a nice pleasant day only an offle wind it blew fierce the light men are working
with the plant.”
“Fri. May 12: “In the forenoon Harry
dragged the piece or meadow on top of the hill and I plowed up on top of the
hill on the other place and in the afternoon he plowed over on the other place
up on top of the hill and I marked out for corn up in the meadow on top of the
hill and at night we all took a ride in the car over to Harrys place & cut
his pigs and we got along very well very cool nights but pleasant day.”
Sat. May 13: “In the forenoon Harry
plowed over to the other place on the field over back or on top of the hill
& I planted corn up in the meadow on top of the hill and in the afternoon
Harry & Harold took the car down to North Argyle & changed batterys

there & then planted corn till night and it is a nice pleasant day. In the
forenoon Harold dragged the corn over in the old orchard on the other place.”
Sun. May 14: “In the morning after
we done the chores we got ready and all went out to Hudson Falls in the car and
had the Batteries taken out and left them at the Garage to get charged and then
we came back home we stopped at the
Cemetery going out & left some flowers on Roscoes grave and about night
Harry & Ruby went down to West Hebron to church and it is a nice pleasant
day getting dry & dusty now.”
Mon. May 15: “In the forenoon I
finished planting corn up on top of the hill in the meadow and we have our corn
all planted now and Harold dragged the rest of the corn ground over with the
smoothing Harrow and then I plowed the hog yard for the garden and Harold
dragged it over and Harry plowed up on top of the hill on the other place and
in the afternoon we both plowed up on top of the hill on the other place with
both teams and it is a nice pleasant day. looked some like rain Marion went to
school a foot & stayed down all night.”
Tues. May 16: “In the morning
we had a Thunder shower & it rained
quite a lot and in the forenoon Harry went over home and got his 6 pigs for me
and 2 shoats he had . He brought them over too and I fixed a potato rack to
sort potatoes over and I sorted a few and in the afternoon I dragged with a
spring tooth Harrow & 3 Horses & Harry took his team & finished
plowing up on top of the hill on the other place & then he dragged over
back behind me with a smoothing Harrow he used his team and it dried off fast
and it is a nice day after the shower. In the afternoon Georgia drove prince
& took Roscoes wagon down to salem & got new rubber tire put on the
front wheels 7.00”
Wed. May 17: “It rained nearly all
day and we sorted seed potatoes & cut seed nearly all day and it rained
right down in the afternoon & it makes grass look nice and rye is beginning
to head out & looks very good. apple trees are beginning to show blossoms.”
Thur. May 18: “In the forenoon Harry
& Ruby took his team & the milk wagon & went over home & got
his old sow & cow & yearling and the boys Harold & James & I
took the cows & a load of manure over on the hill south of the orchard on
the other place & we fixed the fence to keep the cows in & then we came
back & went down & fixed fence down around the old cow pasture and in
the afternoon I load up 2 loads of manure & took 1 load over on the hill
& then it came on rain again & rained all afternoon & we cleaned
out 2 stables & then sorted & cut seed potato till night it is a
wet time just now.”
Fri. May 19: “In the afternoon we
both drew manure over on the other place 8 loads big ones we put it on the hill
south of the orchard and in the afternoon I dragged the rest of the back hill
with the Spring tooth Harrow & 3 Horses & Harry dragged with his team
in the same field with the smoothing Harrow & he did’nt get quite done and
it is drying off fast it is in very good shape to work.”
Sat. May 20: “In the forenoon I
worked out on the back side & on top of the back hill on the other place
and Harry drawed manure on the big hill south of the orchard and in the
afternoon Harold & James took a grist down to West Hebron & got it
ground & brought it back home 5 bbls of corn & 4 of oats and Harry
& I drew a load of hay from the lower barn up to the Horse barn for the
Horses & then went over on the back side of the hill on the other place
& began planting potatoes and it is a nice day it is some cloudy &
rained a little.”
Sun. May 21: “Marion, Harold &
Hazel & Ruby & Harry went to church and they heard a sermon by Mr.
Giffen the Argyle minister and Marion, Hazel & Harold waited for sunday
school and after dinner we all went out to Hudson Falls to get the battery for
the car & they did’nt get it we stopped at the Cemetery & and left some
flowers on Roscoes grave and it is a nice pleasant day and warmer like summer.”
Mon. May 22: “In the forenoon I
marked out for potatoes up on top & back side of the back hill on the other
place and I did’nt get done and Harry drawed manure on the big hill south of
the orchard & he drew over some seed potatoes and in the afternoon we both
planted potatoes over on the back side of the back hill and it is a windy day
but warm and at night we quit early and all went out to Hudson Falls and got
the battery for the car. it looks some like rain at night.”
Tues. May 23: “It was raining in the
morning and rained quite a lot last night and in the morning Harry had to put
in an inner tube one tire on the Auto was flat. & I sorted some seed
potatoes and it quit raining about 9½ o’clock & we went at drawing manure
over on the other place with both teams and it is a cloudy day & the roads
are very muddy again.”
Wed. May 24: “In the morning we took
some seed potatoes over to the other place up on top of the Hill & the back
side & got Harold to bring the team back home & we planted potatoes all
day it was pretty wet in the morning and about 5 o’clock we had a shower &
it made it so wet we had to quit and it was a nice day up to then.”
Thur. May 25: “In the morning
we took out a load of seed potatoes and Harold brought the team back to the
house and we planted potatoes all day up on top of the hill and it is drying of fast to-day the wind blew fierce
up there and Marion did’nt go to school to day she stayed at home.”
Fri. May 26: “In the forenoon we
finished marking out the hill up on top at the other place & planted all
day over there and Mother took Marion down to West Hebron to school she is
going home with Florence and Mother drove the big team & got them shawd and
it is a nice pleasant day warm.”
Sat. May 27: “In the forenoon we
both planted potatoes up on top of the back hill on the other place and we got
done and in the afternoon we took 2 loads of manure over on the Hill south of
the house and then began plowing there and it is a nice pleasant day warmer and
looks some like rain at night.”
Sun. May 28: “In the forenoon Ruby
& Harry went over to Mr. Campbells at Adamsville and after they came back
& 23 done the chores we started in the car to go down to the Cemetery to
put some flowers on Roscoes grave but we broke down on the lower hill and had
to telephone to Hudson Falls & got a car brought out & trail our car
out there to get repaired & Charley Chamberlain came along & turned
around & carried Most of us back home and the rest of us did’nt get home
very early it is a cloudy day & rained a little but cleared off warm.
Mon. May 29: “We both plowed with
both teams on the big hill south of the orchard & took over 4 loads of
manure. and it is a nice day & warmer too In the afternoon Mother drove
Prince down to West Hebron & got Marion from school and it is a nice day.”
Tues. May 30: “In the forenoon it rained
now & then Harry cleaned out the Horse barn & washed his wagon and I
sorted some seed potato & Mother & I drove Prince down to the Cemetery
& put some flowers on Roscoes grave. & Howards. & Annies &
Father & Mothers and we got home about noon and in the afternoon We both
plowed with both teams over on the other place on the big hill south of the
orchard and it rained 2 short showers & it is rather cloudy & at night
it was cooler.”
Wed. May 31: “We both plowed in the
forenoon over on the big hill south of the orchard & in the afternoon Harry
dragged with the big team on the spring tooth Harrow awhile and then he plowed
with me we began plowing with the land
plows and it is warm and we take a load of manure over when we got each time
& spread it.”
Thur. Jun. 1: “In the forenoon we
both plowed with both teams over on the other place and in the afternoon Harry
dragged with his team & Mollie on the spring tooth Harrow & I plowed
with the big team we are getting pretty well along it is a nice pleasant day warmer
to day and it is getting dry fast now.”
Fri. Jun. 2: “In the forenoon we
both plowed with both teams over on the hill south of the orchard on the other
place & in the afternoon Harry dragged with his team & Mollie on the
spring tooth Harrow and I plowed with the big team over there and Harold &
James took a small grist down to West Hebron on the milk wagon & Nell and
it is a nice pleasant day & Hot too. Corn is doing nicely now.”
Sat. Jun. 3: “In the forenoon Billy
brought his team up on the hill & he & Harry plowed & I dragged
with the big team & spring tooth Harrow & Harold dragged with the old
team & smoothing Harrow and in the afternoon they finished plowing about 4
o’clock & it came on rain & I got over it all with my drag & Harold
got over a lot of it and we drawed over a jag of Hay to the Horse barn and it
rained right down about night & after it is a nice rain.”
Sun. Jun. 4: “We had a nice rain
last night it cleared off in the morning after dinner Georgia & I went down
to Lottie Gillis funeral & we went to the Cemetery at Argyle & put some
flowers on Roscoes grave and it was most night when we got home and it is a
nice pleasant day it was warm & some windy it dried up fast.”
Mon. Jun. 5: “In the morning Harry
finished dragging with the smoothing Harrow on the hill on the other place
& I cut potatoes awhile & then he came over & cut potatoes & I
marked out on the hill & after dinner Harry went over & marked out
& we had a thunder shower & I went over & marked out some the other
way & James Lowe came up & papered 2 bed rooms & Marion went after
him & Mother took him home at night & in the afternoon Ruby drove down
to Argyle after some more paper and it cleared off & did’nt rain very
hard.”
Tues. Jun. 6: “In the morning we
took some potatoes over on the hill south of the orchard & began planting
potatoes I marked out some the other way and we planted nearly all day it is
good planting. Marion went down & got Mrs. Bussing she helped Mother to-day & it is a nice pleasant
day but not very Hot.”
Wed. Jun. 7: “In the morning we took
out a load of seed potatoes & I marked out the rest one way & a lot the
other way and John Liddle came over & helped us to plant potatoes all day
and it is a nice day some cloudy but a nice day to plant.”
Thur. Jun. 8: “In the morning we
took out a load of seed potatoes & then I marked out awhile and then I
planted potatoes with John Liddle & Harry nearly all day but before night a
little I marked out the rest of the hill & it looked like rain and it is
good weather to plant but cloudy & windy.”
Fri. Jun. 9: “In the morning we took
out some seed potatoes & we & John planted the rest of the field to
potatoes & we had about 1 bu of seconds left. & we got done about 3
o’clock and then we chored around at one thing & another and it is a cloudy
day & not very warm good grass weather Oats are growing now pretty fast.”
Sat. Jun. 10: “In the morning Harry
took the big team & went up & got a load of slate for Billy & John
took their team also they went to West Pawlet & got 10 sq and in the
forenoon I fixed fence up along the cow pasture & big side hill & then
the boys & I drew the chips & brush & wood that was in the orchard
back of the barn & burned the burdocks & brush and it came on rain
& I husked some corn and then went over to the other place & began
cultivating corn in the old orchard & it books very nice but weedy &
grassy.”
Sun. Jun. 11: “Marion, Hazel &
Marjory & Ruby & Harry went to church & it is childrens day and
they stayed for sunday school and in the afternoon Mr. Ollie Campbell & his
folks came over & Harry’s Mother also & made us a visit and we had
quite a little rain enough to make the roads very slippery they came over in a
car and it is a wet time.”
Mon. Jun. 12: “In the forenoon we
both husked corn in the hay barn and in the afternoon Harry & Ruby drove
out to Hudson Falls and got the Car & Ruby drove back home and I cultivated
corn over on the other place & in the old orchard and it cleared of
warmer.”
Tues. Jun. 13: “In the forenoon
Harry dragged the potatoes up on the back hill & on top also & I
cultivated corn over in the old orchard
on the other place both instances and in the afternoon we both went over &
hoed corn in the old orchard & it came up a thunder shower about 4 o’clock
& after it we came back to the house it was so wet we husked corn till
night and it is warmer & a wet time a great time for grass.”
Wed. Jun. 14: “In the forenoon Harry
& Harold took his team & took the potato digger down to West Hebron
& got it repaired & took it home up to Will Beveridges & I finished
cultivating corn over in the old orchard & then went up on top of the hill
& began cultivating corn and in the afternoon we both hoed corn over in the
old orchard on the other place and we finished it or what we are going to hoe
& it is a nice pleasant day & warm too.”
Thur. Jun. 15: “In the forenoon we
both cultivated corn up on top of the hill in the meadow and we got through it
one way & in the afternoon we drew the best of the pine Lumber over to the
other place & put it up over head in the hog pen and chored around &
Mr. Hunt came up & put in some more of the Electric plant and it is a nice
day some windy.”
Fri. Jun. 16: “In the forenoon we
both went up on top of the hill in the meadow & began cultivating corn but
the rain soon drove us to the house and we cleaned out the cistern &
finished husking corn & put most of the stalks in under the barn Floor and
chored around & Mr. Hunt went home and we had a rainy day a pretty wet time
now the weeds are getting the best of us.”
Sat. Jun. 17: “It rained quite a lot
last night & some in the morning and we drew over a load of oat straw &
put it up in the Horse barn & put the rack on the good Wagon & Billy
brought home the old drag & Wagon box & we put it on the old truck
wagon & put it in the barn cellar & we went down to the lower barn
& put up a new track & put the barn door on it and plowed some in the
lane where the water washed out the dirt & chored around and in the
afternoon we all went out to Fort Edward & done some trading & went on
up to Hudson Falls & Glens Falls & we got home before dark and the
roads are fierce slippery pretty wet time now.”
Sun. Jun. 18: “We all went to church
in the car and we heard a sermon by Mr. McEachron and his text was in Romans
and we stayed for sunday school & we had a shower after we got home and
after we done the chores we all went down to West Hebron some of us went to
childrens day Exercises at the M. E. Church & the rest of us went to
Everetts & Orries and it is a wet time & fierce roads.”
Mon. Jun. 19: “In the morning we
washed the car & then took the big team & went at cultivating corn up
in the meadow but soon got drove to the house by rain & we chored around
& it rained most of the day and it is a wet time.”
Tues. Jun. 20: “In the morning Mother
& I went down to the Cemetery & set out some Pansys on Roscoes grave
and Harry cleaned & oiled the pony Harness and in the afternoon we
cultivated corn up on top of the hill in the meadow and we got done for now
& then we went over to the gravel hole & got 2 barrels of gravel &
brought it over here & it is a cloudy day.”
Wed. Jun. 21: “In the morning we
loaded the calves & some oats and Harry took his team & took them down
to Salem Oats at 45¢ 59½ bu & 4
calves at 11¢ per # and he brought back another gasoline Engine from Mr. Hunts
and Harold & I cultivated corn over on the other place in the old orchard
& it came on rain awhile after dinner and we came to the house and Harry
got home before chore time.”
Thur. Jun. 22: “In the forenoon we
took the old team & cultivators over on the other place and cultivated
potatoes for the first on the back hill they are small too. we had hard work to
see them in places & in the afternoon Harry dragged the potatoes on the
side hill south of the orchard and Harold & I cultivated the rest of the
corn down in the old orchard and it is a nice cool day to work to cold for corn
yet. Florence Chamberlain came home with Marion from school.”
Fri. Jun. 23: “In the morning after
we done the chores we got ready & took the children down to West Hebron
& left part of them at Everetts & Lydia & we went over to Rutland
& went by the way of Granville and went to see about getting a gravestone
for Roscoe. but did’nt see any thing to suit & got home chore time we had a
nice trip.”
Sat. Jun. 24: “In the forenoon we
both cultivated corn up on top of the hill in the meadow back of the house and
we got through it one way & in the afternoon we took the old team and went
through the potatoes with cultivators and it is a warm day over in the other
side of the back hill & on top and at night we all went down to West Hebron
in the Car and it is a nice warm day.”
Sun. Jun. 25: “We did’nt go to
church any of us so stayed at home except Harry he went away some place a
fishing I guess and we are having a nother big rain and at night Marion &
Florence went down to West Hebron & heard the Sermon for the graduates
& when Harry got back he & Ruby went down also and it is a pretty wet
time.”
Mon. Jun. 26: “I got up early about
3 o’clock and got the team ready & took a load of cheese out to Fort Edward
I got out a little after 7 o’clock he went on the Trolly car to Troy and Harry
chored around I got home at noon and in the afternoon we cultivated potatoes
over on the back side of the big hill on the other place and at night we all
went down to West Hebron our folks but me & 3 little ones went to the
Commencement exercises. I stayed at Everetts. and it is a nice pleasant day
warmer . the roads were very muddy.
Tues. Jun. 27: “In the forenoon we
both cultivated potatoes over on the back side & on top of the big hill we
did’nt get quite done and in the afternoon Harry began mowing he mowed with the
big team in the field on the other place south of the house and I cultivated
potatoes up on top of the Hill & got drove to the house a Thunder shower
and it was mostly wind and after chore time or about 9 o’clock we had a
terrible Thunder storm, the lightning struck our barn tore the jet & some
slate & blew out the gable end & broke the window & struck the shed
& the house blew out the phone and it shook & scarred us & some of
the children most to pieces.”
Wed. Jun. 28: “In the forenoon it
was pretty wet & 2 of the Fire insurance Directors came & put the loss
to 15 Dollars and we fixed some fence & chored around & in the
afternoon Harry mowed over on the other
place in the field south of the house and got it done & I finished
cultivating the potatoes up on top of the Hill & hoed some along the bottom
on the back side and then came over home & went up on top of the hill in
the meadow & cultivated some corn & it is a nice day some cloudy.”
Thur. Jun. 29: “In the forenoon We
both cultivated corn up on top of the hill in the meadow & we got through
it the other way and we used the big team & in the afternoon Harry raked
hay over on the other place in the field south of the house & I began
cultivating potatoes on the hill south of the orchard & before night I went
down & helped Harry & Harold to bunch up hay & we got part of it
raked & bunched it was green in places and it is a nice day some cloudy.”
Fri. Jun. 30: “In the morning I went
over & cultivated potatoes on the Hill for awhile & Harry repaired the
Horse rake and then came over & brought the Hay rack & he raked the
rest of the hay & the boys & I opened out the hay & we put on a
load of hay & brought it over & put it in the Horse barn & in the
afternoon we drawed in hay we got over 3 loads & put it up in the shed
& it is a good hay day warmer & pleasant.”
Sat. Jul. 1: “In the morning I
cultivated potatoes awhile over on the hill and Harry mowed the clover hay down
at the other house and then we went at drawing in Hay & drawed in the
afternoon we got it all in 5 big loads & it is big hay but a lot of blue
thisle and at night after we done the chores we all went out to Hudson Falls
& got Mothers carpet we went in the car and it is a nice pleasant day warm
& a good hay day.”
Sun. Jul. 2: “In the forenoon Harry
& Ruby took most of the children over to his place at Adamsville and Mother
& I stayed at home & kept 2 of the little ones and I was about sick all
afternoon & night and we had a nother heavy thunder shower & heavy wind
it tore down buildings & trees at a fierce rate at West Hebron a wet time.”
Mon. Jul. 3: “In the morning after
we done the chores we all got ready and took the car & went to Bennington
in Vermont and we went to see some grave stones that had pictures in them but
did'nt find any We went to see Mr.
Gladstone the Insurance agent also but we made a mistake he lives in Burlington
Vt. We went about 84 miles & got home about chore time it rained showers on
us & rained some here too.”
Tues. Jul. 4: “In the forenoon Ruby
& Marion took Harrys team over to his place at Adamsville & left them
& Harry took the car and went over & they came back with him and I
chored around & I went over to cultivate potatoes but it was so wet I came
back to the house & it rained part of the time and in the afternoon we
washed the car and chored around and it is a nasty time it rained enough to
keep it wet & the wind is in the north cooler.”
Wed. Jul. 5: “In the forenoon we
cultivated potatoes over on the hill South of the orchard and in the afternoon
I cultivated potatoes in the same field & Harry mowed down in the meadow
orchard & trimmed around the trees & it is a very good day but rather
cloudy. Harry turned the hay down in
the garden spot & in the morning we
mowed some by hand down there.”
Thur. Jul. 6: “In the forenoon Harry
finished mowing with the machine down in the meadow below the road & I
cultivated potatoes in the field or hill south of the orchard and in the
afternoon Harry raked the hay down to the lower house & we mowed around the
trees & fence down in the meadow & then we drawed the hay at the lower
house & Harry took sick & Rob Sloan came up & helped me in his
place & we drawed 3 loads & put it in the lower barn and it is a nice
hay day & Hot.”
Fri. Jul. 7: “In the forenoon we
went over & cultivated potatoes awhile on the hill south of the orchard on
the other place and then we came over & Harry raked the hay down in the
meadow orchard & I bunched up and in the afternoon we drawed in 4 loads and
it came up a shower or enough to wet the hay.”
Sat. Jul. 8: “In the forenoon Harry
& I cultivated the potatoes the second time on the back hill they are
looking pretty well it washed some over there and in the afternoon we turned
the hay down in the meadow and drawed in 2 loads & bunched up what was left
about 1 load and it came up a shower 2 or 3 showers came up & some went
around Horrid Hay weather and a wet time to but it is Hot now good corn weather
now.”
Sun. Jul. 9: “We did'nt go to church
to day any of us so all stayed at home last night Mary E. & Harry O. was
sick but are some better to day. Marjory & John C. are not feeling very
well to-day. after we done the chores we all went down to West Hebron in the
car and it is a good hay day & dried of a lot.”
Mon. Jul. 10: “In the forenoon
Harold & I cultivated potatoes over on the other place on the hill south of
the orchard and Harry mowed on the hill south of the woods and in the afternoon
he mowed till it came on rain & I cultivated potatoes till about 4 o’clock
we had a Thunder shower it did'nt very hard and Mother & Marion went down
to West Hebron & got prince shawd and Harry after he quit drove Ben Horse
down & got a shoe put on him & it is a very Hot day & fearful hay
weather.”
Tues. Jul. 11: “In the forenoon We
both cultivated potatoes on the back hill on the other place and in the
afternoon Harry finished mowing the hill South of the woods on the other place
& Harold & I finished cultivating the potatoes on the back hill and
then I cultivated some on the hill south of the orchard & Harry mowed most
of the hay or grass in the rocky field and it is a nice day but rather cloudy a
heavy shower went north of us Marion was sick to-day.”
Wed. Jul. 12: “In the forenoon we
cultivated the corn one way over in the old orchard on the other place and then
came over & onloaded a load of hay and got the other load down in the
meadow orchard and after dinner Harry up set the load driving in the barn yard
& when we got straightened up we went over to the other place & fixed a
place up on the Hill south of the woods to build a stack and Marion raked the
hay for us and we got 3 loads in the stack & it is a very hot day. at night
we all took an Auto ride down to West Hebron.”
Thur. Jul. 13: “In the morning Ruby was sick they sent for a Doctor and a Nurse and she gave birth to a boy about 9 o’clock and in the forenoon Harold raked the hay over in the rocky field & I bunched it up & then Harry brought the big team & wagon over & we drawed 2 loads of hay on the stack & in the afternoon we went over & loaded a load of hay but did’nt get a chance to put it all on the stack a big wind &
