Tues. Jan. 1: (Florence's handwriting -- for Georgiana) "When we got up quite early it had snowed quite a lot and kept on snowing until about the middle of the afternoon. I made bread and rolls to take up to Lester's as we were invited up there for dinner and I also cooked and baked beans for them. We started to go up there about 11 o'clock, after Johnny drove down to the schoolhouse to see about the roads and got along alright but when we got up over the bridge toward McGeoch's it was so icy the wheels whirled so we gave up going and came back home we had dinner and listened to the radio to hear the parade of flowers and the Rosebowl Football game later.  I sewed on Florence's dress and finished it.  We went to bed early. It snowed about a foot or more and it is very light.  Cleared off in the afternoon and the snow plow went up past the schoolhouse but did not come this way."

Wed. Jan. 2: "We got up quite early and Johnny intended to try to go to take the scholars to school, or start anyway, but it had drifted over by the barn and on the hill so he gave it up for a while but about 9:30 he and Florence started but did not go to Darfler's.  They got through and got to school about 10:15.  Johnny didn't come home until school was out.  In the afternoon Jimmy took 6 bushels of potatoes out to Miss Murry for 40¢.  He got home about the time Johnnie and Florence did.  At night we went up to Lester's a while.  The car did not act very good and Johnny had to shovel snow at the turn toward Charles Foster's. The snow plow came through and went toward Mahaffy's in the afternoon.

Thurs. Jan. 3: "7º below zero   We got up quite early and Jimmy and Johnny both went over after Teresa and then Johnny got the Oakland out but it made so much noise that he took Jimmie's car to take the scholars to school.  He brought back a force pump and got the water pipes thawed and the water running but it soon stopped as there was not much water in the spring.  He took Jimmie's car to go after the scholars. At night Ed & Bob Starr came over for supper and brought some popcorn and we had popcorn after supper. The wind got up at night and blew hard.  Lester had to shovel at the top of Foster Hill."

Fri. Jan. 4: "7º below zero    We got up about 7 o'clock and after the boys did chores and we had breakfast Jimmy took the scholars to school and Johnny drove the Oakland to South Argyle and got the new gears in.  Jimmy came home about noon and Johnny got the car finished and brought the children home.  At night Florence went with Jimmy and Rachael to a Grange Dance at the Grange Hall and I went to Mother's and Marions. Johnny went in the Oakland. The snow plow came around at night and scraped roads."

Sat. Jan. 5: "4º below zero    We didn't get up very early and the boys did chores and we had breakfast and Florence cleaned and swept and mopped the kitchen and I sewed some as I did not have flour to do any baking.  Jimmy took 10 bushel of potatoes out to G. S. Eddys and traded them out and he brought Rachael with him.  After he got home I had to bake some and we had dinner about 5 o'clock.  We had chicken dinner. After the boys got milking done we went up to Lester's and Rachael went with us.  We came home about 9:15 and Jimmy took her home.  It was a nice day but cold -- warmer in afternoon.  Johnny cleaned up the Oakland and got it ready for tomorrow's trip."

Sun. Jan. 6: "We didn't get up very early and after the boys got chores done, Johnny got ready and went to Argyle to start on his trip taking the 6 girls back to Oneonta after their vacation.  He got Eileen McWhorter and Stanley McFarland as he was going with him.  He brought Marjory and children up here for the day and they went up to McKernon's after Gertrude and they went by Salem and got the other three girls and to Schaghticoke and got the other one.  They had a nice trip but had to go slow as they had quite a load.  Busy and Lester came down and Lester helped do the milking and Laurence came up and they all were here for supper. Johnny didn't get home until about 3 o'clock.  It thawed alot and at night it rained and made it slippery."

Mon. Jan. 7: "We got up quite early and after breakfast Johnny went over to Darfler's but had to put on chains to get up the hills and when he was going up after McKernon boys he met Helen Shear and got into the ditch so had to work a while to get out as they got to school just in time.  Jimmy put up a grist and took it to Argyle in truck.  He had dinner at Marjory's.  Johnny got home a little before noon.  Just after we got up John Holmes came and wanted a load of potatoes so He and his man went to sorting and Jimmy helped after they got thru with the milking.  They took 22 bu. @ 40¢.  Lester came about noon and wanted Johnny to bring up some horseShoes from Bert Mix's after school.   At night Busy & Lester came down after the shoes but Johnnie didn't get only part of them as Bert didn't have them ready.  We all stayed home.  Still thawing.  Water started running at the barn."

Tues. Jan. 8: "We got up quite early and Johnny took the children to school and brought back the rest of the horseshoes for Lester and he came over from Wades after them.  Jimmy & Johnny went down to the woods by the creek and cut wood.  I baked Bread, Rolls, and a Pie and in coming up stairs I hurt my leg so I could not walk on it for a while but made out to get dinner. Jimmie did noon chores and took truck and went to see about Ed Starr cutting wood and did not get back until Johnny did from school.  Johnny helped with dishes and shoveled off snow from porch roof.  Still thawing, getting quite muddy in the road and swamp in front of house is covered with water.  Lots of bare ground and there was about 2 ft. of snow before the thaw.  McKernon boys go to school with their father as he goes to court as Grand Juror."

Wed. Jan. 9: "We got up quite early and after Breakfast and Chores Johnny took all the scholars to school and was not coming back until night as the water is washing the roads and making them quite bad and Jimmie was going away so I went to Argyle with him and stayed at Mother's until he came back about 8 o'clock.  Then we came home.  He did afternoon chores.  Marion was at Bank taking taxes and Ray was at Lillian Yarter's, so I did not see him or any of the children. Mildred Case comes in Mothers and helps do her work.  Johnny went away at night.  Busy and Lester came down in the morning and they were going to Argyle & Greenwich and they went with Lester's Folks to Troy to look at some horses and mules. Teresa did not come home at night."

Busy stayed here while he was gone."

Jan. 11: "We got up early and Johnny went to Hank Moore's to work when he took scholars to school.  After Jimmy got chores done after breakfast he went over to see Jim Scally about drawing out some wood but thought it was too bad a place.  He went to Argyle and got the milk check cashed and paid for feed we had got and another bag he got today. He got home about 1:30 and had dinner and did chores and sorted potatoes and kept Light Engine going. We all stayed home at night. Marion went to North Argyle to take Taxes and Ray was all ready to come up with Johnny but he wasn't going to come up home.  Ray was disappointed and cried but went to Lills' and stayed."

Lester brought her down and came after her about noon.  Johnny took the scholars to school and went to S. Argyle to work.  Johnny took 6 bu. of potatoes to Miss Murry @ 40¢ and I went down to the Bank on business.  I went down to Marion's and stayed while she took some Tax money as she was keeping John McW. while Marjory & Laurence went to Laurence Dennis' Baby's funeral.  We all stayed home at night.  Jimmy sorted potatoes in forenoon."

The rest of us stayed home.  I did Mother's washing in the morning as I forgot to put it with other washing yesterday and it got nearly all dry.  Busy came down a while in the morning while Lester & Sammy were to Howard Mahaffy's after the Wood Saw, with a sleigh hitched behind his car.":
