Individual note:    5. John CHENEY, b. 10 Jul 1676
6. Eleanor CHENEY, b. 29 Mar 1679; d. 1724; m1. 17 Dec 1696, Richard SHOTWELL of Ipswich; m2. 7 Oct 1698, Thomas SAFFORD (1672-1754) of Ipswich, s/o John & Sarah (LOWE) SAFFORD

My family has small portraits (2x3") of Nathan and his wife Elizabeth (Betsey) Foster (1766-1826) - My 4th ggparents. I have just scanned these paintings and made a fairly good b&w printout. If these are your ancestors too, e-mail me. Nathan's parents were Stephen 1716-1767 and Sally Jarvis 1726-1766.

Hi Nancy, Marty, Julie Cobo and I are all cousins trying to tie Joseph Safford bn 1783 in Washington Co. N.Y. to what we believe is his father Jonathan bn. 1760. I think that your Joseph bn about the same time is a different line. Our Joseph only had one son, Willard bn. 1829. Joseph was married to Sarah Prouty, we have Willard's death certificate. I think that your Joseph was the son of Colonel Joseph Safford bn 1742. Col. Joseph married Marcy Robinson dau. of Samuel and Marcy (Leonard ) Robinson. I can give you this line if you don't have it yet. My source is the Wallbridge Genealogy

I am looking for information on this family: Lt. John Safford (17 July 1742 Ipswich MA to 4 April 1823 Washington NH) who married Mehitable Farnsworth (25 May 1745 Harvard MA to 20 March 1826 Washington NH). They moved from Harvard MA to Washington NH about 1770.

Children born in Harvard MA:
1. LT. JOHN III 12 Aug 1765 m. Olive Puffer 6 children d. 7 Jan 1822 Dexter ME
2. MARTHA 11 March 1767 d. Lempster NH m. Roswell Bingham
3. MEHITABLE 18 June 1769 d. young 29 Aug 1777 Washington NH
Children born in Washington NH:
4. STEPHEN 21 Nov 1771 d. young 31 May 1777 Washington NH
5. MARK 12 May 1777 d. young 29 Aug 1777 Washington NH
6. SIMEON 17 May 1775 d. young 27 May 1777 Washington NH
7. SIMEON SR. (*husband's line) 29 July 1777 m. Sally Rogers about 1804 d. 12 Sept 1845 Dexter ME
8. MEHITABLE 10 Oct 1779 d. young 28 Dec 1785 Washington NH
9. MARK W. 10 Aug 1782 m. Mercy Barrett 1807 8 children d. 5 April 1844 Washington NH
10.LUCY (twin) 6 April 1788 d. young 13 Nov 1800
11.WARD (twin) 6 April 1788 changed name to sTafford d.26 March 1851 Bloomfield, New Jersey

The MYSTERY is the year 1777 -- a child died May 21, another May 27, and TWO died August 29, after my husband's ancestor was born on July 29. This is so sad WHAT happened??

Would appreciate any replies being sent directly to my e-mail since I don't check here regularly.

I am Melissa Hughey-Brozowski, the 10th generation granddaughter of Thomas Safford. I found all this information in a book called the Saffords that I found in the New York State Library. What is your relation? I have been in contact with another "cousin" Dorothy Safford, who lives in Argyle, Washington County, New York.
Please email me at mbrozows@nycap.rr.com if you should require any information that you don't have. I also go to the NYS library at the plaza quite often.

What Tyler from the Bennington Museum sent me, among other things, is a copy of the Boston Transcript, dated November 9, 1931.

There is mentions that Colonel Joseph Safford, b Norwich 1741, married Mercy,------Eldest child Joseph, born Bennington, died Dixborough, Mich., 1857, married MARY, widow of Ranson Glidden of Penn Yan, New York. Took his family to Michigan in 1833. His son Joseph, b Bennington 1810 married Betsy Soddy, etc.

At least we now know that Joseph does exist, was married and had a wife named Mary.

I, also, have conflict with the Safford line and that's why I am trying to find more information about them.

The first genealogy I have was done by my grandmother's great uncle who was born in 1847.

This lineage states Thomas Safford, settling at Agmam, Mass in 1633. His name appears with that of Winthrop Jr. etc. Wife Elizabeth. Also that he was born possibly in Bristol, although he could have sailed from Bristol. The website www.familysearch.org has THOMAS born in Ipswich, England. I have the children of Thomas as Mary 1637, Abigail 1636, Sarah 1641, Elizabeth 1635, Mary 1628, JOHN 1622, Joseph 1652, William 1641. As you can see there is a conflict with dates for John here. I pulled this information from www.family search.org., also, under famly group record, under Thomas Safford. Here it states JOHN #7 born 1622 and JOSEPH #8 born 1633. Unlce Mason's genealogy lists JOHN'S birth as 1633.

JOHN, b 1633 married Sarah, dau of Thomas Law and sister of Deacon Thomas Law. Other info. I have says Low, or Lowe. I have also encountered info. that states that Joseph was married to Sarah Lowe. This according to family search.org., under Joseph Safford, b 1633, parents Thomas and Elizabeth, spouse Sarah Low and Mary Baker. Children were Sarah 1664, Mary 1667, died in infancy, Rebecca 1668, Elizabeth 1669, Mary 1671, Thomas 1672, Joseph 1675. DID JOHN DIE IN PRESTON, NEW LONDON, CONNECTICUT?

I'm hoping you can solve this part of the confusion. I have THOMAS, 1672, son of John, son of Thomas as next in line, married to Elinor Setchwell, or Satchwell. They had son Joseph,b 1705. However, I have conflicting information regarding this. You have JOHN as next in line, married to Abigail Martin. Who do you have as son? I have another Joseph, b 1705 as son, then son Col. Jospeh Safford, b 1741.

Please, please send me any information stating such so I can adjust my lineage.

I have been working, off and on, with the Saffords for over a year and keep getting conflicting dates, names, wives, etc.

I hope we can also pursue the Joseph, probably born in 1777, who married Mary, widow of Ranson Glidden of New York. I have come across this date several times and it is also stated on the genealogy that Mason Safford did sometime in the later part of the 1800's. I'm sure that the 1783 date was a baptism date. SO-----

1. Please send information about JOHN, son of John, son of Thomas, who was married to Abigail Martin. WHEN and WHERE was he born?

2. Please tell me more about the Martin line.

3. Do you have any information about Thomas and Elizabeth on where they came from in England?

4. Please, I WOULD like more information about the Robinson genealogies. I am actually descended from two Robinson lines, one from the Virginia area and the other from the Massachusettes area.

I have visited the DAR museum in Washington D.C. several times. With this newer information I may be able to gleen more information. There is a book there, rather large, on the Saffords of Ohio Valley.

Again, I really would like to get this part of the Safford line cleared up. I am thankful to know that, apparently, my line goes from:

Lucy Safford, 1849-50, Redding, Michigan
Joseph Safford,1810, Bennington, Vt.
Joseph Safford, 1777, Bennington, Vt.
Col. Joseph Safford, 1741, Norwich, Ct. Joseph Safford 1705, Ipwich MA.
JOHN, b?, Ipwich, Ma.?
John, 1633?, Ipswich
Thomas, 1600, England.

Dear John

I have just posted an extensive message to Jeffrey Capizzi and cannot find the energy to retype everything, so please, please find this message. It's under a reply to RE: Books on the Ipswitch Mass. colony, dated 3-17 and again 3-18.

In part, I have found conflicting info. regarding the Joseph Saffords. According to my genealogy I descend from Joseph Safford, 1810, Bennington, Vt., wife Betsy Soddy, Joseph Safford, b probably 1777, not 1783, b Bennington, Vt., wife Mary, widow of Ranson Glidden, Col Joseph Safford, a b 1741 Norwich, Ct., wife Marcy Robinson, Joseph Safford, 1705, Ipswitch MA., wife Anne Longbottom.

I next had listed Thomas Safford, b 1672 Ipswitch, MA., married to Eleanor Satchwell, then John Safford, a 1633, married to Eleanor Cheney, then Thomas 1600, England. However, I kept finding conflicting bits of info.

Jeffrey Capizzi mentioned that HE had Joseph, 1783, was son of Col. Joseph Safford, 1741, m Marcy Robinson, father Joseph, 1705 Ipswitch, Ma., married to Anne Longbottom, FATHER JOHN, married to Abigil Martin, not Thomas, married to Eleanor Cheney.

It appears that YOU have Thomas, 1600, sons John and Joseph. Thomas' son John had a son named John Jr. Joseph had a son John who married Abigaile Martin.

This appears to differ. He states that it was Thomas, John, and John who married Abigail Martin.

Gary,

My question refers to the Thomas Safford and Elizabeth Sutton. Is it Thomas's son Joseph (m Mary Baker) whose son Joseph married Abigale Martin? Is it Thomas's son John (m Sarah Lowe) whose son John (or Joseph) married Hannah Newman?

I think that I'm seeing the names of Thomas, Joseph, and John confused. I have included some information below, but I now have enough misinformation to not be interested in anything but more official documentation. The addition of various sources may make the text below may seem a bit of a tangle.

I've tried to be sensitive to copyright, and I believe what is included below is widely known and relatively old. I've had most of the information below for over 30 years. If anyone objects, let me know.

Jeff

Thomas Safford (b1605 in Ipswich Suffolk, m 1631, d 20 Feb 1666) married Elizabeth Sutton (b 1603, d 4 March 1670). I have an indication of two sons, Joseph and John. From a different source I had a Thomas Safford, which I presumed to be a different Thomas: Thomas (d 20 Feb 1667 Ipswich) married Elizabeth (d 4 March 1671, Ipswich). They had the following children: Joseph (b1631), John (b1633), Elizabeth, Mary, Abigail, and Killam. These two Thomas' may be the same person. I have seen different genealogies with different places of death for Thomas, Ipswich Mass and Ipswich England.

I have a note that the "1st Generation: Joseph Saffourd born 1631 in England, married Mary Baker July 4 1660 in Ipswich, Mass. He then died August 29 1701 at 70 years of age. There is also a note which indicates Joseph's son might also have been known as John. I also have an additional note that another genealogy had 'a Josiah Safford from Staffordshire, England who came to Ipswich 1670. His son John married 7/11/1702 Abigail Martin and died in Noncerib (sp?) Conn.'

Joseph (probably John) Safford (b 1633, d 29 Aug 1701, Ipswich) married Sarah Lowe (b 1637 Boxford, Suffolk, d 6 Sept 1677). Sarah's parents were Thomas Lowe and Susannah. Thomas's parents were Capt. John Lowe and Ellen Revett. John's parents were John Lowe and Susan Serles. John's parents were William Lowe and Margaret Wardell. I have two sons from Joseph Safford and Sarah Lowe: Joseph and Thomas.

About Thomas Safford…
"Judge William Safford of Chillicothe, O. says of him: "The immigrant ancestor. Records have been found of one Thomas Safford being a passenger on a vessel arriving at some port in Massachusetts in 1630 - believed to be the same. The records of Ipswich, Mass, show he resided there in 1641, and he seems to have remained there until his death, as his name appears from time to time in the town records. He married one Elizabeth (surname unknown). He died February 20, 1667, and she died March 4, 1671, both at Ipswich (old spelling Ipswitch). "

from The Early Saffords / "The Follet-Dewey Fassett-Safford Ancestry by Harry Parker Ward" much of this was extracted from the "Genealogical History of the Families of Robinsons, Saffords,, Harwoods and Clarks" by Sarah Robinson, published at Bennington 1837.

John (b 1633) married Sarah S. and they had the following children: Sarah (b 1664), Margaret (b 1666), Rebecca (b1667), Mary (b1669), Elizabeth (b 1671), Thomas (b1672), and Joseph (b 1675). I do have an epitaph for Sarah: (from Follett-Dewey) "Read and consider, stand in AW Do not sin, keep God's law."

About Joseph Safford…
Joseph Safford came from England to Plymouth, Mass. He moved his family to Norwich, CT in 1723. There is a note that the first Saffords landed at Salem in 1638 (Source: Doris Johnson), but it is unclear of their relationship to this line of Saffords.
