Note for:   Richard Flack,    -          Index
Individual note:   For all the information about the Flack family we are indebted to Una Flack (Dr. Lester) Clelland. Her correspondence with other Flack family members located a will of a James Flack in Washington County, New York, who named several children, among them Richard, John, and James, believed to be in St. Lawrence County at the time of his death in 1840. This James Flack (1755-1840) is believed to be the son of Richard Flack, one of four brothers who settled in Washington County in 1767. Una's father told her that only one Flack came from the old world and that all Flacks in this country were related. He said also that they came from Massachusetts to Vermont, to Washington County and then to St. Lawrence County. It seems Richard and John migrated to Lisbon in 1802 as they are in the 1810 census with large families. James appears in the 1820 census with a growing family. The 1790 census of Washington County has two James Flacks (our James and probably a cousin James whose descendants remained there),. And the 1800 census of Washington County has these two James Flacks and also Richard as already head of a household.

Tombstone (?) says killed on Steamboat Empire - Rev war Cem, Salem, NY

Washington County Post Salem, NY Thursday, March 15, 1838

DIED. In this town, on Wednesday, the 7th, inst., Mr. Gideon Safford, in the 84th year of his age. Mr. Safford was born in the town of Preston, Conn., where he spent the earlier years of his life. When about thirty years of age he removed with his young family to this town, then in the "far west." Here he lived and died. He was known to everyone, and known only to be esteemed as an exemplary man in the several relations he sustained, as the head of a large family, a neighbor, and a citizen. Although he had for a long time, even previous to his removing to this town, indulged a hope that he was a Christian, and had maintained the worship of God in his family, and as it is believed in his closet, as well as in the sanctuary, he yet hesitated and delayed to confess Christ before men, and it was not until he was 70 years old that he made a public profession of his faith in the Savior, joining in this solemn consecration with one child and several grandchildren. Retiring in his disposition, the religion of the Cross was ever after a theme to which he deemed to recur with pleasure, and which he lived to exemplify, in consistency and beauty, beyond the common walk of Christians. His faculties somewhat decayed with his years; he was still able, however, until a few hours before his departure, to give utterance to the feelings of a heart at peace with God.
"I have nothing of my own, none but Christ."
It is a remarkable fact and worthy of note, that of Mr. Safford's 12 children, all are now living, and in connection with the church of Christ. May the mantle of their parent rest upon them. There are also now living at least 91 grandchildren, and 66 great-grandchildren, and he buried 21 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

I can add to this:
Nathan Safford married on Sept 11, 1804 to Huldah Eslin

Mary Safford is Mrs John McIntrye and they married 1793. Mary is Gideon's ELDEST

Mrs James Gillis is Lucy Safford

Thomas Safford married 1) Isabell Livingston ; 2) Betsey More on Aug 29, 1826

You're #10, I think, should be Hannah, who married on July 7, 1808 John Bradford.

Mrs David Stewart is Sarah Safford

Mrs Elias Rhodes is Pheobe Safford, and they married Nov 21, 1816. Pheobe died Feb 24, 1870 in Clyde, OH.
