Gideon Safford b. 24 March 1706/7 in Preston, Conn., d. 20 March 1780 in Preston.
Married Elizabeth Hill daughter of John Hill and Elizabeth Yarrington.
The pedigree list only the son, Gideon, born 4 Nov 1754; d. 7 March 1838 in Preston.
Married Lucy Freeman, daughter of Nathan Freeman and Lucy Blegett on 10 Nov 1774.
Their line carries down from Thomas and Eliz., Sutton Safford to John and Sarah Lowe Safford and John and Hannah Newman Safford.
The pedigree covers 12 generations of the younger Gideon Safford's line.
It looks as if my own line may come thru John Safford/Hannah Newman; except I'm not so sure if Hannah is the right wife for us; he apparently was also married to an Abigail Martin and a Debarah.
Take care..
Marty

Am also interested in receiving info of Jonathan Safford's children. Descendants of
Jonathan (B.1738) were Jonathan (1760), Susanna (1762)Sarah (1765) Matthias (1768) Joseph (1770) and Levi (1774). All of these
were born in Preston Ct. Levi is my ancestor. If you have info, let me know.

I am descended from John SAFFORD and Lydia HEBERD through their son John who married Sarah PLUMB. Their daughter Lydia married Daniel FELSHAW or FELCHER in Windsor MA in Nov, 1792. I found this record by chance in the Spring 1997 issue of the Berkshire Genealogist. They had an article on Windsor Massachucetts Marriages 1792 to 18o2. These marriages are NOT in the published Vital Records. Lydia and Daniel went to Morristown VT as did her parents and at least some of the other children.
Lydia Safford Felcher, wife of Daniel, was the first adult burial in Morristown. Both of her parents are also buried in Morristown.
Does anyone have any info on who the parents of Lydia Heberd were? Is she related to the Nathan Hibbard who was married in Norwich, Ct to Zipporah Bushnell in 1735?

There are apparently two John Safford lines. I believe they are somehow connected but can't tie them together.

Briefly, there is the Thomas line and the Josiah line.

Josiah came to the United States in the 1670's, about 30 years after Thomas. He also moved to Ipswich, Mass., therefore the probable tie-in to Thomas, as possibly his uncle.

Josiah had two sons, John and Josiah and probably more that I haven't heard of. They were born in England. John married Abigail Martin and moved with their five children to NORWICH, CT. The other John, forefather Thomas, moved to PRESTON, Ct. with his wife Hannah Newman and children. These towns are both in New London, Ct.

Some say that Abigail was his second wife. However, there is proof that he married a Deborah. Someone has sent me part of a copy of his will that states such. It's impossible for him to have married Abigail and then Deborah, therefore, as Abigail died in 1768 and he died in 1736.

John, who married Hannah, died in the Safford cemetery in 1736. Children of John and Hannah:

John, 1687, Hannah, 1691, Sarah, 1694, Mary, 1697, Elizabeth, 1700, Margaret, 1703, Joseph, 1705, Gideon, 1709

John, who married Abigail, died in 1739 in the Ames Cemetery. Abigail is also buried there. John and Abigail's children:

Abigail, 1702, Joseph, 1705, John 1711, Solomon 1713, Sarah 1718.

Joseph married Anne Longbottom. They moved to Bennington, Vermont. I go through this line, Joseph, son of Joseph married Marcy Robinson.

John and Abigail's other son John married Lydia Hebard. They had sons John, 1738, Josiah, 1740, Lydia, 1743, Jedediah, 1748, Elisha, 1748, Zerviah, 1750, Sabra, 1752, Silas, 1755.

I can give you more information if you want.

Nancy Lee

Dear Vicky

There are two John Safford lines.

I believe what you may be looking for is the John Safford who married Hannah Newman.

One of their children was John, who was born Feb 28, 1687-8. That's all I have and this was copied from the Wallbridge Genealogy. Other children: Hannah, 1691, Sarah, 1694, Mary, 1697, Elizabeth, 1700, Margaret, 1703, Joseph, 1705, Gideon, 1709. I believe all were born in Ipswich, Mass. The family later moved to Preston, New London County, Ct.

If this looks promising, check the Preston or New London County records for the marriage of John and Dorothy.

Dear Larry

I have four typewritten pages on the Safford lines and if you would like I could send them to you. It does prove that there were definitely two John Saffords, married to two different women, and living in the same general areas.

Basically, on Josiah, this is what I have so far: The Ohio Valley Safford book, pgs 52-55, also 165-167. Here the author is also explaining the two separate lines. In part it states: '"Josiah Safford, from Staffordsire, in 1670, settled in Ipswich; a son named John moved to Norwich, Conn, with Abigail, his wife, and five children, all of whom died there except Joseph who, in 1763, with his family, moved to Bennington, Vt."'
This was from a quote from the Vermont Historical Gazetteer, Volume II, under Josiah Safford.

This is what I have put together.

Josiah Safford had son JOHN, among others.

Children of JOHN were:

Abigail, 1720, Joseph, 1705, John 1711, Solomon, 1713, Sarah, 1718.

Son JOHN had as children: Josiah, 1740, Lydia, 1743, Jedediah, 1746, Elisha, 1748, Zerviah, 1750, Sabra, 1752, Silas, 1755.

Son JOPSEPH had as children:

Joseph, 1741, David, 1743,44, Hannah, 1745,56, Lucy, 1748, Esther,
1749-50, Jacob, 1752, Solomonm 1755.

I have part of the copy of the Vermont Historical Gazeetteer Volume II, 1871. Under the town of Fairfax it states in part:

JOSIAH SAFFORD: "Josiah Safford's grandfather emigrated from Staffordshire, England, in 1670, and settled in Ipswich, Connecticut." (the Ct. part is wrong, it was Mass.) "One of his sons named John, moved to Norwich, Ct., with his wife, whose maiden name was Abigail Morton (this was Martin) and 5 children;--all of whom died there except Joseph, who in 1783, (it was 1761) with his family moved to Bennington, Vt. His son Josiah, the subject of this sketch, (son of John, therefore, his grandson) moved to Fairfax in 1788, and commenced his settlement," etc.

It then goes on to talk about Capt. Erastus Safford, son of above Josiah.

I plan on pursuing Josiah a little further, into Fairfax,Vt., if possible, although my direct line goes through son Joseph.

There are also several genealogies that use this Josiah as their descendent. The Sarah Robinson genealogy uses Joseph as descendent. While her genealogy contains errors, at least it shows that this line was not descended from the Thomas line. It says that Joseph Safford was born in England, where he died, son Joseph Safford came from England to Plymouth Mass; he removed family to Norwich Ct. in 1723, children of Joseph Safford and Abigail Safford were: she has Abigail, Joseph, John Sarah, Solomon.

One thing is certain. While the two lines are apparently connected, perhaps as uncle and nephew or 2nd cousins or the like, there is no way to connect both Johns through the ever popular Thomas.

I would like to hear from you again and see what kind of information you might have.

I also plan to look into the towns of Malone, New York, for Saffords, as well as looking into Lewis, New York for Saffords and their allied families of the Nichols and Woods.

Nancy Lee

Larry

The problem with the Johns is this:

There is no way a person can connect John and Abigail, as far as I can see, with John and Hannah. John Safford (wife Hannah Newman), I believe can be traced with reasonable certainty through the Thomas line.

It cannot be done with the John who married Abigail Martin. That is why many try to prove that Abigail is the second wife of John, and that he married again, to a Deborah.

I believe I mentioned that I have part of a copy of the will of John, 1st wife Hannah that clearly mentions wife Deborah. That being so, John, DID marry again. This John died in 1736 in Preston,Ct. and was buried in the Safford cemetery. No mention of where Hannah was buried.

The other John, who married Abigail Martin, died in 1739 and was buried in the Ames cemetery in what is now the town of Lisbon but was, at that time, Norwich. Abigail is buried at the same cemetery. She died in 1768.

From what I can see my line of Saffords, coming from John, Abigail and Joseph Anne Longbottom were the Saffords that migraged to Vermont.

If you can claim lineage to John and Abigail I bet you aren't a direct descendant of Thomas. I don't believe that line went up into Vermont.

I tried for a year to connect myself to the Thomas Safford line and I know of at least one other person who I believe did more research than I who also couldn't get past John and Abigail. It just doesn't connect up.

The Ohio Valley Safford book gives a detailed description of who descended from whom. Try to find it again, and read, especially those pages I mentioned.

Why don't you write me at my e-mail and I can send you the information I have regarding the two Johns. I think it might be helpful.

John and Abigail had as children Joseph, Abigail, John, Solomon, Sarah.

Among John's children were Josiah, 1740 and Silas, Jedediah, Elisha. Josiah was the founder of Fairfax. I checked out the Fairfax cemetery listing today and came across a Safford Cemetery there that has some of Josiah's children and probable grandchildren buried there, although, he apparently wasn't.

Joseph, b 1705, moved to Bennington, Vt. He married Anne Longbottom. Their children were Samuel, Esther, Joseph, Solomon,
Anne, Elizabeth, Abigail.

Do you have any evidence of the other line moving into Vermont, and when?

Nancy Lee

I don't know if this will help but I do have a possible tie-in to Lydia Safford.

John and Abigail Martin Safford moved to Norwich, Ct. They had five children, Abigail, b 1702, Joseph, b 1705, John bpt 1711, Solomon, bpt 1713, Sarah, bpt 1718. Since the last three were baptized in Ipswich, Mass. and Abigail came from Andover, Mass., I'm assuming the first two were also born in or around Ipswich, although there is no record of Abigail at all and I believe the wrong Joseph recorded in 1705.

My Joseph married Ann Longbottom. John married LYDIA HEBARD. Their children were John, Josiah, LYDIA, Jedediah, Elsiha, Zerviah, Sabra and Silas.

Joseph moved to Bennington, Vt. Josiah, son of John moved to Fairfax, Vt. I'm trying to track down more.

However, some of the Saffords did move on into New York in the early 1800's. I think there is a good chance that your Lydia is related to this line. However, they appear to have moved into the upper part of New York.

Upon looking at where Hancock is, it is also possible that you descend through Hannah Newman and the other John Safford who lived in Preston, Ct. I am not tracing, at this time, their line as it does not related to mine. It's pretty close to Connecticut.

You might want to start checking Preston and Norwich, New London Ct. for more information. I'm sure you are related to one of the two John Saffords.

I hope this information at least helps a little.
