Thomas Safford sailed from Bristol, Englan in 1627 on the ship "Fortune. He arrived in 1630. Records show he was in Ipswich, Massachusetts in 1641. He bought 32 acres of farm land from Henry Kingsbury in 1648.
And I have about 26 pages on this family up unto the present time.
John and Hanna Safford did have a son named John Jr. I don't know what his date of birth was, however he married Abigail Martin on July 11, 1702. They also had a son named John and he was baptized July 16, 1711.
If you are interested in finding out more about this line, let me know. This John Safford, son of John and Hanna was my Great-Great-Great-Great-Great Grandfather.
There were many other John Safford's before these. The first, that I know of was living in Ipswich Mass. in 1630 and there was also a Thomas Safford in Ipswich in 1630. One or both of them probably came over from England on the Ship "Fortune" in 1629. I do have more information about the early Safford's in New England, and don't doubt the one your looking for is in there somewhere.

I'm afraid I don't have much time to help you in this line of research, but you may not be far off. A glance at my genealogy indicated there was an Elizabeth Cheney who married Thomas Safford, grandfather to Rebecca Safford (b 30 Aug 1667). I have a few Wheelers in my genealogy but their connection to the Saffords is rather indirect. It does place them in close proximity to the Saffords however and it might suggest a few other avenues of research to pursue.

*** My main interest has been the family tree of the American Saffords who have descended from Thomas Safford, the original immigrant ancestor who came from England to America about 1638. I love to put the puzzle together of all the people in this gigantic family tree And I love to pass on the information to anyone else who would find it useful.
*** My husband and I have 3 daughters and 2 sons, all terrific kids who are now young adults. Our 2 sons will be the first ones in 5 generations who have the chance to pass on the family name.
*** While my husband, the Safford involved here, has very little interest in the family tree, he is very proud of his ancestor John M. Safford, 1845-1912, who fought in the Civil War in the 20th Maine Regiment. They had an important role in Gettysburg on the 2nd day of battle at Little Round Top. The movie "Gettysburg" with Jeff Daniels and other good actors is an excellent story about this unit. We were thrilled to go there in 2000 and walk the same steps that this ancestor walked.

Need to find Samuel...
There might be some interest in knowing that Samuel Safford was second in command to Seth Warner of the Green Mountain Boys in the battle at Bennington Vt.. This battle was a deceiding factor in the subsequent victory at Saratoga during the Revolutionary war. Samuel was the son of Joseph Safford of Ipswitch and Norwich Conn. Joseph's father was John Jr., son of John Safford of Ipswich, son of either Joseph/Thomas or Josiah Safford of Ipswich and England.
have a Samuel Henry Safford marrying Lucretia Storey in 1844 in Newbury,MA. I also have a Samuel Payson Safford married to a Mary Eliza Stanwood in Newburyport, MA about 1872.

The Sarah Robinson genealogy was written about the Robinson line that came from Massachusetts.
The Safford line links into the Robinson line. Samuel Robinson was the founder of Bennington, Vt. His friend Jospeh Safford (Deacon) was also one of the first settlers in Bennington.
Joseph Safford was married to Ann Longbottom. He was born in Norwich, Ct. Joseph Safford, Jr., my ancestor, was born in Bennington, Vt. in or around 1780. He married Marcy Robinson, daughter of Samuel Robinson and had several daughters and one son, Joseph Safford, probably born in Bennington in the year 1810.
Possibly the Samuel Robinson you are referring to was the son of Samuel Robinson. I am descended from his daughter Marcy.
The Saffords that came from Preston Ct. were not direct descendants.
Joseph Safford apparently moved, with his father, (the one born in 1780) to Michigan. I am in the process of trying to find out more about the father. I do not know the complete name of his wife nor if he remained married to her. I am also leery of the claim that he died in Detroit.
